Why do some people come to this country, not bother learning English and still want to be treated equally?

As of this date the inability to speak English is not breaking any laws. Therefore, those who do not speak English should be treated as if they have broken laws. If and when the laws change making it imperative that English be spoken let's say to become a citizen, then you have a different question. The Base of your question is an interesting one. Should all people speak English in order to be properly integrated into ONE society? Does the inability to have a single language lead to lack of cohesion and unity?

Oh, that just ticks me off too. I am an American. I should be able to go ANYWHERE in this country and order a burger or buy a gallon of gasoline without having to worry about whether or not the person I am buying from speaks English or not. It's just pitiful. The number one requirement to being an American citizen or even being allowed to step foot in this country, should be the ability to speak English.

A language does take time to learn especially english! You all really need to give them a break, and lay off! Immigrants come here to work so imagine working hard to support your family, getting home and learning english......what the big deal about this anyways...go chase some terrorists instead

The freedom of speech is a gift we all should embrace, but I truly believe we need one national language, English. Again there is nothing wrong in speaking another language in are everyday life, but there needs to be a common ground here. I'm Hispanic and my family goes back almost 8 generations back in the state of Texas, both my grandfather and father and myself have served this great nation in the military, my brother is in Iraq doing he's service. We all speak Spanish and English, but I must agree English must be the official language in this great country. Hey I get upset when I get my mail and it's all in Spanish, I'm not in Mexico! Even some of the billboards are in Spanish where I live. This is nonsense, The United States should not have to change it's language to satisfy a large movement from the south. Again nothing wrong in speaking another language, great learn about who you are, but lets come together in a nation of one, not two..

what the heck does not bothering to learn English have to do with treating someone equally? treat others as you would want to be treated. do you understand how hard it may be for people who are new to something to learn something that is difficult to learn? did you come out your mothers womb speaking perfect English? No. Get over yourself.

the Constitution mentions something about "all men are created equal", no? I've read it and it doesn't say all men who speak english are created equal.

who knows. they think because the american woman like them the men should to. they need to stop demanding and burning are flag. pay taxes.

i would also like to add. at the hotel i work a russian immigrant and her german husband are staying there, they are both legal. i told her i liked her accent, and she spoke real good english. she said she had to learn because they was immigrating to america. they wanted to be able to converse with the americans, they wanted to understand what was up.

english is a hard language to learn, give them time. Dont be rude, its not like YOU could learn a language in a day. They come here for a better life, and they get here only to be treated horribly by rude, nasty people like you.

Another great question is why do people that live in this country treat people unfairly just because they don't speak English? Maybe they forgot how America got it's start and need to take American history again or read a book. Or maybe they've never visited Ellis Island where most of our ancestors arrived.....
Then again, maybe they themselves aren't smart enough to learn a second language so they would have no idea how hard it is to learn English....
