I have been around alot of mexicans,for the past 10 years and most of them can speak english they just choose not to because of everything that goes on.so actually they are very smart people because can speak 2 languages,and write in both also.mexicans are good people that has to put up with alot of bull. |

They are not stupid but they didnt learn the language before entering the country. I work in Spain a lot and learned the language before I went there to work on a certain program. I didn't know everything but I knew enough to get by and pick up the rest within a month or two. When you travel it is best to be respectful and learn the language before you visit. Thats just being a good natured human. Anyone that doesnt well they aren't being polite. |

People like to put themselves on a pedastal and put others down to make themselves feel big. When most people hear another person speaking in poor English, they are likely to think that they are just a stupid ignorant person. What they don't realize, is that although their English might not be perfect, they immigrant speaks TWO languages. How many "intelligent" Americans can say that?
It's all about pride, putting yourself above others, and keeping it that way.
By the way, English is not the official language of the United States. Until we make it that, you can't be mad at someone for not being fluent in English. Most other countries are smart enough to have an official language, so blame our government for never making English our official language before you blame people for not speaking it. |

well english is mostly spoken here so, of course they expect you to talk english but still I'm with you on this one! cause my first language was Spanish and i was born here my second language is English , i speak it damn well i can also speak Spanish. But i do agree that people criticize that people who don't grasp English very well are stupid not true. And so what if your in America? Uh did you forget that this country is a mixed, that we have tolerance and if they cant speak English then learn there language |

Mendi its not that they are stupid but if you come to a country that is foreign to you and you want to get ahead you need to learn english; how else are you going to compete with everyone else for a good job. Another reason, to get ahead you need an education, if you dont understand english and are not fluent in it how are you going to go to college? It is going to mean you are left behind. That is not smart. That just makes you fall behind and it stops you from getting ahead. I say go ahead and speak your native tongue in your home, with your friends and such but you need to know it just to make it here. That is clear. It also means you are assimilating into american culture. Without language that is impossible. |

yup agree with a person above me if THEY ARE LIVING IN ANY ENGLISH COUNTRY they have to learn their langauge not just like them because its their mother tongue but atleast to convey their msg clearly...BUT if someone is not live in any English country no one can call them stupid or illitrate if they don't know english |

The whole aspect is many a country have the education system where medium of teaching is English, hence the thinking is that if one is literate then one would have learnt English and if they cannot speak fluent English then they had not been to school |

most of us who immigrated over here from other countries (my family included) had to find a sponsor, pay money, go through miles of red tape and were thrilled to be here. The first order of business was to learn english and the second was to get a job. In our culture, it was considered a disgrace to speak italian in america while in public. Most other families have the same views. I see illegal immigrants from mexico, and they don't even seem proud or happy to be here, many take little or no pride in educating their children. I have worked with illegal immigrants who have lived here for over 10 years and couldn't form a coherent sentence in english, and they expected me to speak spanish. Their children become gang bangers and life long recipients of government handouts. That is why I have no respect for anyone who lives here and has no desire to learn our language, if I moved to russia; I would learn to speak russian. Plain and simple. |
