Why do we allow xenophobia to drive our public policy on immigration?
|
Xenophobia colors a lot of the public discourse and particularly the Y!A discourse on immigration. Obsurd comments are regularly made that do nothing but push racial/national antagonisms. Why is this tolerated by so many? Additional Details Why is "You" in quotation marks. Do you not believe that I'm actually a person? I don't get it...

As you have noticed, it's gone way beyond just name calling by the people that have allowed Xenophobia to drive our public policy on immigration. They even continue to use links to the top 10 anti-immigration sites that have been found to have links to racist organizations. They've been informed over and over again, but continue to use them as 'reliable sources for immigration'..........so it's way beyond Xenophobia by these people now...........so so sad!

Behind the recent upswing in anti-immigration activism are an array of groups, including the 10 listed here. Most of these groups regularly work together, and their leaders frequently hold cross-memberships in several organizations at once. Some of the groups have clear ties to openly racist organizations, and even some of those that don't still espouse thinly disguised bigotry.

I didn't realize that wishing for U.S. law to be obeyed was being xenophobic. Could you email how that applies, I really am curious. |

I don't care about color or race or even immigration -- what I care about, and what the majority of US citizens care about, is the ILLEGAL part. I live in a border state, and illegal immigrants run rampant. While there might be many good people who just "want to come to America for a better life," there are many who are driving without insurance, commit serious crimes, take advantage of health care and other benefits, and when they are made to be accountable, they slip back accross the border leaving people like me to pick up the tab. It's just frustrating. |

Because the Latino and corporate lobby are working together bribing politicians to exploit poor latinos for there cheap labor. |

That is not happening. Tell me, why do we let Hispanic racism drive our immigration policies. Do you really want 10 million illegal alien Mexicans, most of whom have no education and can't speak English, to be given amnesty? Racists are on both sides of the issue, but predominantly on the pro-illegal alien side.
You are wearing your hat backwards, dude. |

Here are the factors:
1. Nationalism--The belief (not only in the U.S.) that is pounded into the brain from childhood, that because "our" country is the best (not saying that it isn't), that means "we" are the best. Meaning Americans are better than other nationalities. Also, fostering this belief is...
2. Religion--The far majority of religions in this country also support this nationalistic pride, perhaps not outright saying it (although some do), but in effect teaching that the U.S. is God's chosen country, therefore we are God's People, so all others must be Satan's people. Almost noone would outright admit to this but its really what they are implying. (of course, this is true is mostly all countries, (i.e. Muslim nations)
3. Greed--"Greed is good" is the admitted motto of capitalism. Why does noone want to pay more taxes? Especially the rich? The more money you have, the more money you want and the more you want to hold on to. That is the human condition, unfortunately. The wealthy say, "Why should my money be taken away and given to the poor?" Really, it shouldn't. You should give it freely of your own choice. The problem is, you won't. They say, "But, it's not fair!! It's my money!" So is it fair that one baby is born in wealth and luxury, will never have to know what need really is, while another is born in abject poverty, and is doomed by a government that does not care for it's citizens to suffer a short, miserable life? LIFE IS NOT FAIR!! At least, you could volunteer to make it a little better. (And I don't mean just donating to a charity for a tax break)
4. Racism--no need to expound on this, we all know what it is (or maybe not)
The excuse used sooo often is "we just object to them doing things ILLEGAL", but it's only illegal if the government makes it so. Laws can be changed, but of course these individuals wouldn't do that for the 4 preceding reasons.
It's only fair to add, these four reasons exist in all countries to some degree or other, it's just this question was directly aimed at the U.S. issue. (By the way, I was born and raised in the U.S. just like my parents and their parents. I have ancestry that traces back to the Mayflower, just for reference) |

the only thing im scared about is getting 10-30 million more people on the welfare rolls. I know most of them have jobs, but $8 an hour wont bring in much for taxes (and according to many pro-immigration folk theyre all already paying taxes so we wont see any increase in $) compared to what will be spent on them through entitlement programs. State and federal governments together spend slight over 1 trillion dollars a year alone on medicare and medicaid to provide coverage for about 40 million americans right now. i bet most illegal immigrants would qualify for one of these programs. then we have to pay for education for them, unemployment, social security, etc... the country is already broke because of social programs, if we legalize them were going to pay a lot more. it could cost us hundreds of billions if not into the trillions of dollars annually
and dont forget that they broke our laws and came here uninvited. i dont understand why people think they deserve to be rewarded for doing that. yeah itd be great if everyone could just waltz in, but you really need to think about the consequences |

So someone shooting someone else in the head (9,000+ homicides per year by illegal aliens) wouldn't be a crime? It would be xenophobia?
Raping a child (84,000 illegal alien child molesters in the US) isn't a crime? It would be xenophobia?
All those other things we think of as crimes aren't really crimes? They are just xenophobia?
What planet do you live on? Here on earth they are crimes!
If someone breaks into my house I kill them regardless of race, color, creed, national origin or anything else! Is that xenophobic too? Or is it only xenophobic if a country is involved? |
