Usefulness at the time of entering the USA is only one of the things we should consider before deciding whether immigration is a good thing for the USA.
Because future usefulness is practically impossible to quantify or qualify, we go instead by what has happened in the past. |

True... if illegal they should be just sent home.. they can speak whatever they like there. |

not being funny or anything but if they are illegal they should not be here anyway. |

Because to have any reasonable chance of success in America you need to speak English. No one wants to be part of a permanent underclass.... or do they? |

As long as we send them back to where they came from, it doesn't. |

Well the expense for one thing, and safety another.
Why in heavens name would you want to live in a country and not know the language? I personally would be afraid that I would be injured or such and not be able to tell the emergency personnel or the police what has happened to me, but then other countries do not baby people the way we do, our fix for this problem is to hire a ton of interpreters at the expense of taxpayers. If you want to win over the people of a country try not requiring special attention that must be paid for with our money.
I have to admit to you I am always amazed when someone asks this question, I would think the answer would be obvious. |

PRETTY SIMPLE ANSWER, BECAUSE WE SAID SO. |

I could care less if they speak the native language of the country they choose to immigrate to. That being said if they have any aspirations at all to prosper then they should be smart enough to realize to attain such prosperity requires the knowledge to speak the language which is common. |

They come to our country for a better way of life. English is the official language in the USA, and they should learn how to speak it because of this. If I moved to their country, they would expect me to know their language. |

It doesn't matter what illegal aliens do so long as they do it in their home country. |

i think it has something to do with the concept of assimilation which our laws work towards, instead of isolation
but like everyone else has said, if they are illegal, then they shouldn't be here |

they do need to know basics...how can they order food, pay for thing or if they get arrested and do not understand english you cant really say they broke the law if they cant understand the law initially...i see young kids paying for their parents all the time... |

Because if they come here for the "American Dream" then they should realize that learning English is apart of that, and that to be really successful in the U.S., then learning English is a must. |

It is important for people to be able to communicate and understand our language properly in order to function while in our country. |

Immigrants, legal or not, and in any country should be speaking the language of that country. It works out better for both parties. Don't you hate it when you go to a drivethrough window and the person there doesn't speak English? It's already hard enough to hear them if they were speaking perfect English. It's also probably unpleasant for that person too because they don't know what you're saying. Then when they get your order wrong they'll probably get yelled at with words that they don't understand. It just makes things so much easier if everybody speaks the language appropriate for the country in question. |

because if they live in this country and want to stay here, they should take the time to learn the language. i don't care if they're illegal or not.
if you go to france and plan on living there, don't you think you should learn french?
if you don't speak the langauge of the country you live in, you're going to have a hell of time ever getting ahead and making anything of yourself. |

...because it's especially annoying if they can't! Sike, I'm being mean.
If someone can speak the native language, it shows some kind of preparation, or sincerity in intending to be a contributing member of society. I mean, no one should be obligated to know how to speak the language right when they get here, but I've known some people who have lived here for like 20 years, and never learned one word, while they live off of welfare. What kind of deed is this? This isn't acceptable by any standard. |

Actually it doesn't, it's much easier to take advantage of the illiterate...so what do we really care, stay stupid! |

They are in the united states. our primary language is English. so learn it when you come here. and don't come here illegally. become a us citizen. its not that hard. |

If youre going to get into a country illegally, then surely it would make some sense to learn a little of the local language.
If only so you can avoid some of the usual pitfalls that beset many people. Like dealing with mean hearted people who think everyone MUST speak english or die! |

Because everone in this country (U.S.A) should have to speak our language if they are going to live here!! Its just ridiculous! It makes me mad just thinking about it so im done answering this wuestion. |

They shouldnt have time to learn it they should be deported!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

A. They are illegal and so they should not be here in the first place.
B. If they *do* get amnesty (reward for breaking the law), then they should try to learn American English because, oh,..I don't know...Americans speak that language and if they want to communicate with Americans, they should strive to learn it? Hello!
What about their kids, thrown into an English speaking school system? You don't think those poor kids have a rough time? You don't think teachers are holding the ENTIRE class back in order to try and teach the English language from scratch?
What about service jobs? (Restaurants, supermarkets, drive-thrus, etc.) Shouldn't the employees be able to efficiently communicate with their customers?
I am not saying that they cannot ever speak their native language; but in the instances I mentioned above, wouldn't it be logical to learn English?
And a last thought; If I were going to move to say, Italy, I would try very hard to learn Italian so that I could communicate efficiently, and be able to hold a job, find a place to live, etc. And I sure as hell wouldn't move to Italy and spit on their culture as a whole, disrespect their laws and government, and fly my own country's falg above theirs and THEN demand more rights than their own citizens on top of it! I would never dream of being so mannerless, ungrateful, and rude.
And I agree with others that many topics turn uselessly to illegal immigration; but learning the native tongue of the country you are (illegally) moving to naturally turns into such a debated topic.
This, from a liberal leaning hippie girl with friends from ALL walks of life. |

One would think that if you are going to another country to live whether it be legal or not you would want to be able to speak the mother language of that country...so you know what is going on ...life would be a bit easier don't you think. Why should the entire country change their mother tongue for others coming here? I say if you can't speak English too bad and leave, we didn't ask you to come here and we are not changing our language to suit you. |

As illegals, I do not care what they speak. Illegal is illegal - deportation.
As legal immigrates it matters because among other things - the cost of interrupters for business, 2nd language classes in schools, signs printed in 2 languages, & just plain old basic politeness, they moved here & other countries do not change all forms & signs so that English speaking can read or talk to them.
It matters - financially & a good citizen wants to be intergrated in not try to stay seperate. I say "love us or leave us" Hispanic or American. |

hope2help are you clinically retarded? If every immigrant has to give up their culture we would be wearing leather skins and feathers on our heads living in tents hunting buffalo
not to mention theres probably a small...a minute...chance that one of your ancestors is *maybe* an immigrant. So you can feel that! |

it doesnt. they do jobs that dont require much communication other than amongst themselves. |

It doesn't with illegals. It just helps to identify them easier.
Legal immigrants? Yes. They should speak and read english at a 6-8th grade level to understand what is expected of them, like what is expected of natural born citizens. |
