Because you are not in Mexico. You are in the United States of America. If you want them to get out of school for Mexican holidays then go back to Mexico. It's as simple as that. |

They do... in Mexico. Like it or not you are now in the USA and if you truly desire to be a US citizen than you should learn about your new culture. I am an American living abroad and I do not get US holidays off; I get the host country's holidays off. It is their country and you should respect the culture within which you reside. This does not mean you forget your own culture. Go ahead and continue to celebrate, but always keep in mind, when in Rome, do as the Romans. |

Because the only point of Mexican holidays is to get drunk.
Why would you want your kids to get drunk? |

Memorial day is a day we go visit family and friends who have passed away, and I thought Mexicans were family orriented,HELLO?And when kids get out of school,it means all kids get out no matter what race you are,If you want to get out of school for Mexican holidays tell it to the Mexican government ,When in AMERICA,DO AS THE Americans do,or shut up! |

Well, in Mexico we never celebrated American holidays. If the U.S. celebrated every international Holiday, we would have everyday of the year off! My daughters and I celebrate Mexican holidays on weekends and I teach them about our ancestry through books and activities. You don't need a day off. |

If you want to celebrate Mexican holidays, GO TO MEXICO! This is NOT Mexico and why should we celebrate holidays of another country - GEEZE!
It's bad enough that they keep talking about the "5th of May." That's stupid and is only an excuse for people to get drunk! |

Because you're not in Mexico. If you want to celebrate Mexican holidays, move to Mexico.
You also have the choice of keeping your kids home for your holidays if you want. They can let their teacher know ahead of time that they'll be missing school because their family celebrates X-holiday and they need to get their homework ahead of time. You can't expect American schools to recognize every holiday from every country in the world, can you? They kids would never be in school. That's why we have "Official" holidays.
My heritage is German, but I don't celebrate any German holidays because I don't see myself as a German - I see myself as an American. It is called assimilation. My family assimilated into the American society and culture when they came over here from Germany.
Unless you count drinking German beer as celebrating German holidays - in that case, everyday could be a holiday.

Are you kidding? Hispanics have the highest drop out rate and you want MORE days off?
Why don't you just drop out today since you're going to drop out eventually? Save the U.S. taxpayer for paying for your education that you will stop using. |

For the same reason that Romanian kids don't get out of school for Romanian holidays.
This is the USA. We have our own holidays. Your kids get off on the USA holidays right? Should they also take Turkish, Romanian, Rusian, French......holidays as well as the Mexican holidays you want them to take?
You can have a private holiday observance of those days after school or alternately on a weekend.
You don't know what Memorial Day is? You are raising your family in the US. Take time to use google.com and search for Memorial Day. It is one of the most important holidays in the US.
Teach your kids respect for their American heritage as well as their Mexican heritage. |

Well, the answer is obvious. THIS IS NOT MEXICO!!! When you are in the United States, you must abide by our laws. If you wanna celebrate the Mexican holidays, do it in your own household, or go back to Mexico. Just because you are a Mexican doesn't mean that you get everything you want. Welcome to the world! |

You are absolutely crazy to ask a question like that. |

With all due respect, you are asking a stupid question. For obvious reasons, most of the replies indicate to either go back to Mexico or this isn't Mexico.
It's understandable that you want to share and celebrate your heritage with your kids and you should have the right to do so. However, do it in a proper and intelligent manner.
Best of luck. |

Memorial Day is a day to honor those who are now gone. A person may take the day to remember those who have been a part of their life, or those who have paved the way for our freedoms, one of which is to celebrate holidays without work or school.
I can only assume that you are from Mexico, living in the United States. If being in this country is important to you then you must be ready to concede to the workings of this country.
I am scandinavian, I will not be celebrating the holidays of my family's place of origin. But this does not change my heritage.
If you are not allowed the days off that others living in the United States then there is a problem . But, if your only problem is that you can't celebrate Mexican holidays, then you the only way to rectify the situation is to spend those days in Mexico.
Everyone has to make sacrifices.
Please do not be offended by my answer and I will not be offended by your question. |

let me ask my 13 year old this one.
she said to tell you if your in America, and you can't understand our American holidays, then you need to leave. your living in America, not your country. we have our holidays here. this is not mexico, so we don't need to celebrate mexicos holidays. go home if you don't like the way our country does things. and your brain dead if you can't understand this your self. |

If you want your kids to have Mexican holidays off, maybe you should move back to Mexico. And if you don't know what Memorial Day commemorates you shouldn't be in this country anyways. |

Would it be fair if German kids got off for German holidays? French kids get off for their holidays? And so on????
Yes you should celebrate your heritage (although you are here illegally) but you need to adapt to the American way of life since you are living in the good ole US of A! |

Because you don't live in Mexico. If you want the Mexican holidays off, then go live there. What made you ask such an ignorant question?
And let me just clarify that I think you're bringing this up in early May (today is May 10th) either because of 5 de Mayo (May 5th) or Dia de las Madres (May 10th). There is no way that either of these is a no-work holiday.
Cinco de Mayo is not a major holiday, even in Mexico. This is not their independence day celebration. It is merely celebrating winning the battle of Puebla and defeating the French troops. It was basically the beginning of the end, which did not come until 16 de Septiembre (Their independence day, which IS a day off in Mexico).
Mother's Day is also not a national holiday that people get off work, either in the U.S. or in Mexico.
And as for the racist ignorant answerers: I am Mexican and got a college education - as have many of my cousins. What makes you so hostile to my culture and so willing to bet that Latino children will be high school dropouts?
Additionally, the majority of Mexican Nationals I see are hard working and have jobs that no one with an American birth certificate would even want (including me). |

yea my kids school doesn't celebrate Cinco de Mayo!
