Why don't these immigrants assimilate into the American culture?

Great! I'm so glad to hear that. I feel that I'm also American before anything else. I wasn't even born in the U.S. - immigrated here LEGALLY with my parents when I was a toddler --- and we stood in line to become citizens.

The immigrants you talk about don't assimilate b/c they don't want to and they don't have to. Our govt and private businesses (e.g., press "one" for English, "dos" for Spanish) allow them to stick within their own culture. I think it's sad and pathetic.

I live in Taiwan. I have light brown hair (at least I used to--now it's grey), and blue eyes. I'm not Taiwanese, I'm not Chinese, and I never will be either.

I can try to speak the language as much as I can, and I respect the local religious and other customs that are very different from my own.

However, I'm never going to assimilate. It's too much to ask.

I think that if you live in a country, you should certainly learn their language as best you can and try to do things their way.

But I don't think that they should completely assimilate into the country they are in. They are who they are, and shouldn't compromise their culture because they wanted to live somewhere with more opportunity..

I was born in America, When I went to School they put me in the 1C (Mexican Room) I was beaten at school for speaking Spanish. I never assimilated into the American Culture, I am Bilingual/Bi cultural , I worked in the English Speaking world and went home to the Spanish speaking world and Culture.
I am a University of Arizona Graduate and was the 1st Chicano School Board member on my local School District.
I plan to move to Thailand, to live, life is good there and in my village, I am the only Falang (foreigner).

the fact that your parents chose to change and forget where they came from is something they decided to do but not everyone is like your parents...
be proud of who you are and never let anyone change that... culture and learning english are two different things...

I don't think assimilation is PC anymore...my great grandmother refused to speak French or German [her native languages] She was very proud to be an American. It is sad to lose the culture...there has to be balance...

There's no such thing as "American culture". American culture is a mix of all cultures from all over the world.

And you are a second-generation immigrant, of course you will speak English like an American. Anyone who is born here speaks English. It's not that easy to learn a new language after immigrating as an adult. Have you ever tried it?

you seem to be confusing assimilation with abiding by our laws and learning our language.they don't have to lose their culture or identity,just don't act like this is still their country of origin.here we don't allow you to beat your wife bloody,they will go to jail here for that and they need to know that.they need to study our laws and language before ever stepping foot on US soil.
most illegals don't expect to stay long,that's why they don't assimilate.

From what I've seen they see them selves as SUPERIOR and alot of them talk S*** about blacks and whites. The majority of them are RACIST. Go to youtube.com and you will see all of the Racist remarks they make.

Its terrible. Oh and the lies they say about this was once Mexico. Why because of the Spanish that raped and enslaved my Native American people. Oh I don't recall Aztecs or Mayans on this side of the border. They are ignorant as well.

I am GLAD we pushed the Spanish out of here or this would be another POVERTY STRICKEN THIRD World like every other country the Spanish took over!

If they only knew that learning English would benefit them. English is the #1 International language. They think because others learn spanish to talk to them they are superior. However, its the people here who want to take advantage of them for CHEAP labor that learn their language.

Plus the CORPORATIONS that SUBMIT to Spanish are only out to MAKE MONEY off of them. I guess the Mexican Nationals and ILLEGAL HISPANICS don't see it that way!

Most Mexicans don't care. The government and just about everyone caters to them and makes it incredibly easy so they don't have to. Meanwhile, the Americans are the ones who get the short end of the stick.

Because they don't have to. When the Constitution was being ratified, the national language law was turned downed by one vote, and that national language in the bill, German. Can you believe it, a law that would have made all documents and teaching be forced into German.

We as US citizens cater too much to everything being bilingual. She is right, we need to have laws where English is the primary language and all state and federal procedures are only in English. English proficiency before you come a citizen. And all official quotes and songs must be in English.

I am not putting down other cultures at all, in fact, I enjoy traveling and speak Spanish. But when in these other countries, I do not expect them to have everything in English for me. And if you make an attempt, most citizens will help you out and applaud your efforts.

So before you bash me about American being a big melting pot, remember the money is always printed in English(and a little Latin, but we killed that language already)

Why should they when the government hands them everything on a silver platter and make us pay for it & give a tip.

I live in Texas and down here it's live in America for 20 or 30 years never apply for citizenship, build your fortune sent it all back to Mexico tax free, get a house which becomes the gateway to america and have 5-6 families live in it at a time, buy everyone a new vehicle from a dealership that sell exclusively to illegals and no one else including Latinos which includes car insurance it does'nt matter if they have a license or not, underbid everyone in the market place bring the economy down, have your babies and let the American taxpayer pick up that tab too, marry a Mexican girl who is 1st or 2nd generation American, let your children run up and down the aisles in Walmart openning up everything and eating food they have'nt paid for and don't plan on, sit on the car someone else has has worked hard to pay for and call them loco, play your music loud at 2am on a Sunday morning while your neighbors are trying to sleep, be rude, nasty, disrepective of people and to people, go back and forth to Mexico as much as you want,. And when they start talking about cracking down on immigration laws, deporting people and closing the border.

Cry "the government is doing me wrong".

Assimilate are your serious we have been assimilating in reverse. The next time your in Arizona, New Mexico or Nevada stop by one of the reservations and ask some of my Cherokee brothers just how much we have assimilated. Or if you don't want to go that far just ask the next black man you see or the next Irishman that thinks being back in Ireland may not be such a bad idea.

These are the people I decent from and none of them really had a choice in the matter. The goverment still is'nt falling all over it's self to help them. But,we are expected to help everyone else who comes here. They have learned to do what ever it takes to survive in the country with or without help.

But, this new group never will until our government and Mexico come to an understanding about lots of things.

All of this gives a new meaning to remember the Alamo.

It is great to hear about you and your family. I believe that all immigrants should learn English, and educate themselves on what it is to be an American.

That is not to say that they should forget about their culture and past. Those are important things...

I don't think that America should directly cater to those people who don't put forth the effort (like as someone said - "one" for english "dos" for espanol... that's rediculous).
