Why should we have to? This is an English speaking country. Learn the language. |

The same reason Mexicans don't have to learn English, or why the Chinese don't have to speak Italian, or why the portugese don't have to speak French. You are only asked to understand the official language in your own country. For the United States of America, that language is English. If you move to the U.S. from anywhere else why should the rest of the country have to speak your language, instead of visa versa. If every time in U.S. history that there was a large influx of people from a different country, the entire population had to learn a new language we'd all be required to know dozens of languages. Not very plausible, is it? |

Because ENGLISH is our national language. Why do Mexicans come here and expect us to cater to them? They truly do. My son takes Tae Kwon Do and the other day a non English speaking Mexican joined the class and was holding things up because he couldn't communicate, so the Master was trying to speak in Spanish. TKD is a Korean art. All the other children speak English, so why did he have to try and cater to the Mexican kid? |

On May 19, 2006, the United States Senate voted to make English the national language of the United States. According to the bill, written by Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.), the federal government will no longer provide multilingual communications and services, except for those already guaranteed by law. Shortly after the approval of the Inhofe amendment, the Senate voted for another bill by Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colo.), according to which English is the "common unifying language of the United States," but mandated that nothing in that declaration "shall diminish or expand any existing rights" regarding multilingual services. |

Because we live in an English speaking country, now if we were in a Spanish speaking country then we would have to learn Spanish. Spanish people need to learn to speak English or any other national language where they live, if not in their home country. |

because we speak english here. I love that fact that we have diverse cultures in this country, but something needs to connect us together as americans, and that is our language. Its great if you have the time or desire to learn a new language, but it should not be a requirment. If i move to mexico, i'll learn spanish. if mexicans come here, they shoud learn english. its common courtesy. |

Id have no problem if I had to learn it. I work with many Spanish people and it makes them comfortable when I understand them. They work here with me, and I want to treat them equally. |

Mexicans speak Spanish in their country; it is their official language. If I were to travel there or live there, I would speak Spanish there. English is spoken here in America. It is our national language. If you want to live here, then you must learn to function in an English-speaking environment. That doesn't (or at least shouldn't) stop us Americans from learning how to speak other languages, however. I speak three and am learning three others. If someone from another country comes to live here, they should learn to speak the language. It's common courtesy. I know English is a commonly-spoken language in a lot of places these days, but I certainly don't expect people in other countries to speak English to me when I visit them. |

English is America's unofficial language, which is why schools teach in English. We don't HAVE to learn Spanish because the education board doesn't see it as necessary. |

Why don't mexicans learn to speak english? I mean it's only the NATIONAL language.
I figure I'll learn spanish if I move to Mexico or Spain. I mean, it's only common sense.
BTW, I've tried to learn spanish, but it completely escapes me. Though I've learned german and russian and some arabic. |

Hmmm ... there are many Americans who speak 2, 3 or even more languages .... why Spanish?? Many Americans do learn Spanish .... just as many Americans learn French or German or Russian or any other language that interests them ... |

All those who have supported English in MY and THEIR country (ie: United States), have already spoken for me!
Other than that, before I was deployed to the Middle East, I was tought Arabic a year and 1/2 beforehand...
Try investing the time to learn the language if you really want to stay in my homeland! If not, you are most certainly welcome to leave...

Spanish is a formal language, Castillian.
Mexican slang is just baby talk, basically.
The official language for the U.S.A. is English.
That would be like someone from France asking
why Americans don't have to speak French.
Ludicrous.
You always try to stir up trouble, but it just makes you look small and foolish. |

We spend all of our funds for education on ESL programs for illegal immigrants which leaves insufficient over for other programs like PE and gifted programs - forget the expense of actually letting our children become bilingual as well.
We pay for education, since poor immigrants even if they pay taxes take out much more in services than their taxes cover. We pay for it, but most of it is spent on ESL related programs in areas where illegals concentrate. The schools are failing our own children due to the huge burden of stretching our services to accomodate so many illegally here.
I wish our children could opt to learn a second language in their elementary years, and if the illegals weren't here, there would be funds enough. I actually wouldn't push for deportation of the good sort if the bleeding were stopped, however, deportation would clearly be a major improvement towards adequate school funding in our border states. |

Because we live here and are an English speaking society.... it is wrong to accommodate foreigners who are here illegally.... totally wrong.
The USA should not accommodate criminals.... what the hell is wrong with Congress and the President???? Why do they allow employers to commit a crime by hiring illegal aliens???? Why are they so hell bent on hurting Americans and America???????????????????? |
