Why has Britain been a popular destination for migrants? Is this trend likely to continue into the foreseeable future? Can anybody suggest any good books or websites or other media on the topic?

Britain has excellent welfare programs. Something the United States shares with Britain, and the reason for so many illegal aliens here also.

Because we have free health care, we pay for health care as part of our income tax, not as a separate insurance. Everyone has access to it, regardless of whether they work or not.
Also we have government benefits for just about anything nowadays. Disability, single parenting, runny nose, chesty cough etc
Although immigration laws are becoming more strict now, it used to be that all you basically needed to get into this country was a sob story about how you were persecuted and oppressed back in your own country (no offense intended).

Britain have rock solid economy and high GBP exchange rate.The GDP is high because of gold and diamonds they have collected by ruling all over the world. The life style in UK is excellent and best welfare programs in the world.
