Well, everyone ELSE on the planet calls us Americans, so why shouldn't WE?
Mexicans call themselves Mexicans, Canadians call themselves Canadians...I guess nobody else wants that particular nickname.

Please, this is old and has been posted numerous times. Your statement is wrong, just like every similar question before! The people in the USA call themselves Americans because we are. If you are not from the USA, you are NOT an American!

Google "America" and you will see a map of the United States of America. If you look up the "American continent" you get the US AND a bunch of other counties that are not America! You are mixing up country and continent! Sorry but didn't you take geography?

The only people that are "Americans" are the citizens from "AMERICA!!!!!" Mexicans are NOT AMERICANS!!!!

You may claim, like another poster, that "everyone from Alaska to Argentina are Americans" but you'd be WRONG!

It's simply the identifying noun for what we call ourselves and what everyone else in the world calls us.

And by the way, it's in the English Dictionary.

Here is a thought: what is a Mexican-American? What is an African-American? What is an Asian-American? In my book, if you need a "modifier" to describe an American, then we are not on the same page. American's are citizens of the U.S.A.

English is not your first language is it? We call ourselves Americans because we are. We don't want to own the continent, just The United States of America, you won't find many of us wanting to go to any other country in the Americas so don't worry, we won't be at your front door any time soon. This is an unfortunate result of difference in education. Many in Central America and South America are taught there are 7 continents, and one is 'Oceana'. We and most of the western world are taught there are 7 continents, 'Oceana' isn't one, and North and South America are separate continents. Since there is no 'America' except us (as the United States of Mexico are referred to as Mexico') it is normal and not 'exclusionary' for us to call ourselves Americans. We aren't about to change it at this point, after hundreds of years. Others, to us, are in 'the Americas' which is different.

However, does it matter? Being on the same continent doesn't give anyone particular rights in a different country on that continent.

Well, I suppose anyone living in North America could technically call themselves Americans. I don't think any of us from the USA think we own anything except maybe the patch of land we live on!

I believe it is just a form, however we are all Americans. That did not meant that Mexicans and other called Americans from Central and South America have the right to move to United States without following the laws of immigrations as I did when I applied to immigrate to United States from South American and I get accepted.
Now I am an American citizen and I defend their laws as mine.
I passed many test to show how much I was welling to offer to USA, such as high education, economic situation, health status, resignation to receive any kind of social services, interview with authorities showing my plans for the future for me and my family not depending on economic helps from tax payers, self sufficient, become a law defender for Americans human rights and respect current laws as any legal resident.
I am agains illegal immigration, and I do not believe they have any rights in this country, since did not follow the procedures as I and many legal immigrants did to be accepted.

South Americans and Central Americans are also Americans. So are the Native Americans, although for a long time the U.S. did not even allow them to have U.S. citizenship.

The U.S. should not be the only country to claim the title of Americans.
