Because we live in a free society, where democracy and capitalism applies.
Democracy is rule by the majority. So whenever you have a majority of people, or a very large percentage even it it's not the majority, they get their way.
There are communities in the US where the majority of the people are Spanish-speaking. And because the Constitution doesn't require or prohibit any national language, that majority chooses to speak Spanish.
Even without a majority, because of the way capitalism works, if a large percentage of the consumer base wants something, companies will provide it. A large number of people want Spanish-language stations, papers, products, menu options. So, the companies provide what the consumers want.
That's the nature of democracy and capitalism. The alternative is fascism, where the government demands that everything happen a certain way, and the population has no say in the matter. |

Because Mexicans are too lazy to learn English. Cubans, Peruvians, Puerto Ricans, etc. don't seem to have a problem learning English. it's because Mexicans are lazy. |

I may get reported for my answer. However, it is the multiculturalism,as postulated by liberals, who champion that idea. |

Because Mexicans are too lazy to learn English. Cubans, Peruvians, Puerto Ricans, etc. don't seem to have a problem learning English. it's because Mexicans are lazy and don't care as long as they get what they want.

I've been thinking the same thing. I agree with what someone already said on here. Mexicans are lazy and self-centered. The self-centeredness is in there culture. It's rediculous. THIS IS AMERICA. YOU COME HERE, YOU SPEAK ENGLISH. COMPRENDO? No more of this spanish on everything. THIS IS AMERICA. WE SPEAK ENGLISH. LEARN IT OR GET OUT. |

its pathetic...first of all most of them are stealing everything they got here if theyre illegal. and even so our ancestors had to learn english...theyre no exception. personally i honestly believe most of them are too stupid to learn it. i mean look what they did to their own country! |

They come here and expect us to change everything for them, even though there are 11 million illegal immigrants here and out government is so worried about the Hispanic vote that they allow it all to happen. They are to lazy to learn our language and enjoy being catered to by this country even though they broke the law to be in it. |

It's because they are arrogant and lazy.People are getting fed up though and there will be changes soon.American's are known for having compassion .But we're not stupid . |

It makes me sick, because your politicians are to afraid to get rid of the cheap labor that they, even themselves probably hire.
I hate it. We speak English here, learn it or leave!
Or if we start to put everything in Spanish we need to put it in every other language out there because if we cater to one why not cater to all, I mean the cost alone of printing all the different languages would be reason enough to just print it in English. |

You know I wish I actually understood why we are trying to change our language, it really doesn't make sense. You don't see other countries doing that ,do you. Here in the U.S. it seems that we are a little too concerned with making sure other people aren't offended. I think that when people come to another country they need to realize that they are going to have to speak the language. |

languages are evolving all the time. Things are changing.
It's just a matter of how humanity is. As people migrate
they change things where they go. before the colonizers, spanish was not spoken in south america, but tribal languages were. people change their languages. dialects (for example native american) are disappearing everywhere. 600 years ago only native american languages were spoken here but now it's mostly english. by even the native americans. go figure. |

Hey girl

To rebutt stifle you's answer, I am a liberal and I think its completely proposterous that we as actual americans are forced to read this spanish crap. I am not against anyone being bilingual, but I think its CRAP that everything has to cater to these people who dont want to get off their asses and learn OUR language as they drain our paychecks with their medicaid and social security benefits. |

You are looking at the marketing, advertising and political courting of the fastest growing segment in our nation: Spanish Speaking Immigrants.
They make money, spend money, and will gravitate to things they understand and can interact with (things in Spanish).
If you want it to change, you have to dry up the jobs in the US given to illegal migrant workers, you have to build more secure and impregnable border control mechanisms, and you have to insist on English being the representative language for all businesses, schools and government offices.
Villaraigosa was a radical Chicano activist in his college days. He was a hard working son of a gun, but he didn't buy into the long term viability or privilege of America managing and controlling the Southwest.
Immigrant Mexicans cannot rise up in arms to take over this region, but with more of them, there becomes less of everyone else, who move away because of standard of living or excessive taxation or both. Therefore, the slow, steady, silent takeover of the Southwest by those of Central American decent is something supported by Villaraigosa. He is not a mayor for all of L.A., just those who are most like him.
No one is victimized, in a relative sense, here in the U.S., for we ask that you speak English, and abide by our laws and culture and traditions and language, and for that, you are given free and open access to all the social services, better wages and infrastructure and OPPORTUNITY you could never dream of in your homeland. For that we should expect more English speaking, zealous citizens in the making, not illiteracy and crime that continues to grow in those areas with poor immigration control. |

Because instead of being a normal country and having the immigrants assimilate anymore we change our traditions, our culture, our language etc to suit them or because it offends them. |

What's even stranger, that they make it a racial issue. Every time someone tries to pass a law to make English the official language, someone complains that it's racism. Did you know most English speakers around the world are not white? It's simply our language. Americans speak English. It doesn't matter who was here first or what our race is. That's what we speak. We don't want to take anyone's culture away. We just want them to speak English and obey the law, just like us.
good question by the way |

i understand what your saying but america, espec. cali is being shared by different cultures and languages everywhere. i say of course english should be the universal language, but i dont dissagree with directions and stuff that come with 3 languages. why dont you learn spanish?at least then youll know what their saying, because its not going to go away>all people who come here should also be strongly encouraged to learn english! |

Spanish will never overtake English and those afraid it will are simply paranoid. English is the language of commerce around the world. |

That is because historically California was always a spanish speaking region even when the U.S. purchased the land from former Mexican president Santa Ana in the late 1700's. Currently the hispanic population who predominantly speak spanish are on pace to become majority in the US in 10 years or so. |

Well, the more people you have in one area that speak a given language, the more you're going to see it, hear it, and eventually learn some of it yourself. If you REALLY want to challenge yourself that way, move to the Big Apple. 200 languages, no waiting...keep your cat indoors... |

If I moved to Spain, I would learn spanish. (that is just me). In Florida, spanish is considered a secondary language. Actually, spanish speaking people make up a huge part of our economy.
I am not saying it is right or it is fair, but money talks. What do you think would happen if all the spanish speaking people left our country? Our economy would go right into the ******* so to speak.
Oh well, lets all just try to get along.

Technically, we don't have an official language, and I don't want one.
We also don't actually speak English here, we speak a dialect known as American English. This was changed from Brittish English back in the 1700s when one of the Websters (can never remember which one) was commissioned to create a dictionary for America that was distinct from Brittain's.
People are speaking Spanish more because there are more Spanish speakers here. People make do this so others can understand them and to speak to a target audience. Unlike the rest of the world, Americans aren't forced to learn more than one language. In almost every other developed country, all school children, from elementary, are taught at least English and their native language. |
