Don't worry about it.
African Americans are not expected to wave the African flag, note. Most wouldn't know which one to wave. They are Americans and that is what they choose to call themselves. If you want to call your self Mexican American, fine. In this board I think people are just trying to take your pulse to see if you think you are American, with an honored Mexican tradition and background, or are a Mexican who just happened to be born here, but considers himself Mexican.
Mind you, it is none of their business either way.
You are not going to please everyone on this. Just please yourself. |

people should be people.....
either you are an American or not....
my two cents. |

I truly dislike the word "African-American". Even the blacks hate it. They're just fine being called black. Like, "I'm a BLACK man, I have pride!" But...it's such a generalization. You don't hear about African Europeans, or African-Mexicans, or African Russians. |

I refer to myself as:
American of Mexican descent |

Didn't you just ask this question? I believe I gave a book for my answer....
Chill out.. African-Americans did not choose to be here in the very beginning-- so it's only respectful to be specific. However, many and most prefer to be called American...
I know I didn't state that fact, and I'm sorry I left it out the first time, but, we did not ask for millions of Mexicans to come over here to introduce them to slave labor. They volunteered for it-- as they still are doing it...

Relax pal, I've never known of anyone to get upset when people refer to themselves as Mexican-American. Where do you live? |

Oh, well, I'm a Mexican-American and nobody's offended.
I never even heard of anyone being called, Irish-American or Italian-American, or Mexican-American and getting offended by the title.
The only thing I can think of that may offend people is when someone calls themselves Mexican-American and they're here Illegally.. If they are here illegally then they aren't Americans.. You can't call yourself a Mexican-American until you're an American citizen. |

where in the USA do you live? First, I don't think one person would be 'offended' by Mexican-American. You must be hanging around inbred fools if that offends them.
Second, what does the term African-American have anything to do with you? That's comparing apples to oranges. |

I'm mixed with black, Mexican, and white but I refer to myself as black because its who accepted me first and most of my family is black and we call ourselves black because we have never been to Africa and calling yourself black or African American has to do with religion as well as ancestry |

I've never heard of anyone getting offended by a Mexican-American calling themselves a Mexican-American. And I live in Texas, with lots of Mexican-Americans, as well as Black/African-Americans. My husband is a Puerto Rican-American (though he doesn't call himself that because all Puerto Ricans are already Americans), I'm an Irish-American, and I work with a Polish-American and a German-American. It's an ethnic and cultural roots-thing, has nothing to do with putting the ethnic group before America (who made that up?) and people just need to lighten up about it!! After all, the only people who didn't come here from somewhere else are the Native Americans ... and in some cases, the former Mexicans who lived in this area before America. |

I like Mexican-American. But, you know, why don't we all just call ourselves Americans? I do not call myself French American. |

There's nothing wrong when a Mexican citizen of this country calls himself Mexican-American. It's when illegals do that I start to wonder. |

Look, call yourself whatever you want. Just quit whinning. How would you react if I called myself a white-American. You then would call me a racist, I'm sure.
In other words take a break, would ya? |

You are unfortunately correct...
They seem to want to be "black" before they are Americans..
I don't know why..
It isn't like we don't know what color they are...
As long as they continue to call themselves "black-Americans"
they will continue to be second class citizens... |

I think the whole issue is a load. You are an American citizen or you're not. Categorizing yourself by your ethnicity is a form of separatism and lends a hand to racism. |

how about just saying "human beings"? and "black" people dont like to be called black because they arent, they are brown |

I think you're stereotyping. You can't assume that all people do that. If you are a citizen of the US you are an American. |

I too don't know why we don't all refer to ourselves as Americans, but it doesn't bother me to call people what ever they prefer to be called.I am American from German ancestry but I don't call my self German-American,I know my history and why would others care.I don't understand the hyphenated Americans identification but as I said if that makes all people happy I will do it .I respect all people and its their right as it is yours to be called what ever you feel best about
Back in the US history people were called derogatory names by stupid people, those names became synonymous with bigotry,so when African Americans gained their full civil rights in 1969 the people threw away those names and used black as a proud new unity name,Black Power,Black Pride etc,as time passed and people changed the symbolic names changed and now the term is African American, that may change as the years pass too .Again I am just an American, but I respect your rights as to your name of choice.
I just want the illegals to get out of this country and come in the legal way get legal or don't come here. |

Cause most black people are just anal about their names...I don't get it! American is American
Illegal is Illegal

I don't care what you call yourself. If you are here legally, then call yourself a Mexican American. Call yourself "Ishmael" if you like. I don't care. Just make sure you follow the laws of the land if you would like to be called an American. . .
I also refer to everyone as a person. The color of their skin is irrelevant. People are people. That is it. |

next year it'll be illegal to call yourself a white hispanic of undecided gender with a preferance for rap music. you'll have to call yourself or oneself a minority in the majority with a liking for rap but in no gender ranking prioity of spanish american extraction. d'ya know what im a paddy and feckin proud of it. |

As long as your a legal citizen i don't care if you call your self and A Mexico African American. And I'm not raciest, i look at it like this i hate all of you motherfuc*ers equally, white, black, purple green, People are annoying!!! |

Why are we afraid of true terms? Black, white, yellow and brown are colors that describe skin. "Black" American should only further describe an American. If you were born in Ethiopia and became an American citizen, YOU'RE AN AMERICAN.. these hyphens are a bunch of divisive garbage. |

I don't get it, ur talking in circles. Who cares what anyone is calling themselves. Get over it! |

I consider myself a American first of Mexican ancestry. People will always look at your skin and judge you. In my situation I am an American whom does not speak Spanish. So it is twice as hard. I am disseminated by two cultures. It's exhausting! |

I've never been offended by someone referring to themselves as a Mexican-American, as long as they are the American part. If they're here illegally, they are most certainly NOT an American.
However, most ethnic groups self-segregate by putting their race or national origin in front of American. For example, I am a Korean-American (or Asian-American, if I'm being more general). I don't use that term very often, as in my personal opinion, I am simply an American. But I am proud of my Korean heritage as well, and I have no problem with any Mexican who is an American citizen being proud of their Mexican heritage. |

I have never known anyone to get offended at hearing the term Mexican American. I don't see anything wrong with it. The reason why we call ourselves black because this term is much less offensive than colored. |

i'm not sure i fully understand your question. but i think you should call yourself whatever you want. what did you mean "when a mexican-american calls themself mexican-american, people get so offended"? which people -- 'mexican' people or 'white' people.
p.s. if it makes you feel any better i would't get offended if you referred to yourself as mexican-american |
