Why is it ok to let Mexican fruit and vegetables into the US, but not their people?

Shouldn't we be trying to grow more of our own lettuces?
We probably wouldn't have as many Salmonella outbreaks, and it would look less hypocritical.
I wouldn't mind working on a vegetable farm. It would be better than McDonalds anyway. Additional Details Don't tell me I have no idea how hard that work is. You don't know me.
I grew up on a farm, and I know that it's hard work. But it's no harder than working in a warehouse, and millions of Americans do that everyday.
Vegatable picking would be a perfect summer job for some kids, and it wouldn't need to be a life long career.

wow, lots of bitter answers, did they read the whole question? i would like to see us knockoff the "anything for a dollar" attitude where if it can be done for 2% less in a foreign country and shipped over here let's go for it..the mexicans arn't our problem, we are our problem. the "jobs that americans won't do" are not jobs that americans won;t do, they're jobs that can be done cheaper by illegal aliens who are used to making $5.00 a day. if you where offered a 1200% pay increase, 500% better liiving conditions, government aide where there was none before, exceptional health care, and all you have to do is quietly, steadfastly do your job, hell yes you would be a good worker! we are the fault for the greed that keeps us from having things done locally, for surcumbing to the lure of cheap labor, we are at fault for letting them all come in, if i was them i would get out of that hole too. |

I agree, we should not allow any vegetables from mexico, the government should stop paying American farmers not to grow and to allow them to grow more for our own country! i have worked picking veggies before so I know Americans will do it and your proof too! I refuse to buy anything anymore unless it is locally grown and thank goodness I can and I know no diseased illegal had their hands on it!! |

Fruit and vegetables feed people, an donot need to be fed. Fruit and vegetables do not require a home, job, nutrition to take care of them. And they don't hurt the eonemy. |

I choose not to buy Mexican products. I don't have a choice when some illegal infects us with tuberculosis or some other unchecked disease and becomes a tax burden by marrying a fat white woman and having seven kids with her. |

I agree, We need to ship all those who do not belong here back to where they are from and start growing and creating more American made stuff, like food and clothes and yeah maybe we could stop buying from people who like to poison us.

Because the Mexican Government is trying very hard to get rid of the poor people of Mexico by shipping them to this country where they can collect welfare off of the American Taxpayer. We don't want people to come and collect our money for their families... we want our money to spend on our own families. Further, the Catholic Church will not set up a family planning program for the poor of Mexico, and the Government of Mexico seems to like it that way... so the story continues, and they are going to have a lot more poor people staying in Mexico.
We accept fruits and veggies.. some of them... from Mexico because the Mexican Government asked us too. But you are correct that picking fruits and veggies is not a bad job at all, and particularly good in summer time. ($17.00 an hour). The Growers in this country have abused the people who pick those crops for so long, the number of people in that business is way, way down. It will take a couple of years, but when the future is clear and the Immigration Law enforced, those workers will be there in large numbers.
But there is another problem here. We pay a fortune in subsidies to our growers to grow those crops. We wind up paying $1.00 for a potato when we could be buying those potatoes for 5 cents from the Mexican Grower.
There is a shortage of labor in Mexico. And while I suggest they are poor people, in fact they are not. They actually do very well, and when they follow United States Department of Ag rules and regulations, getting those crops to the American Market is very quick, and the the crop is as good as anything done here.
======================================...
There is a very, very good chance that most of the American Southwest will become very dry and totally unable to grow much of anything. It is a fact of life that that north western portion of Mexico could ALSO become serious desert, and without water.
Something to think about. |

Few safeguards for Mexican fruit and veggies bound for U.S.; producers just need to register..ALLENDE, Mexico (AP) _ At the end of a dirt road in northern Mexico, the conveyer belts processing hundreds of tons of vegetables a year for U.S. and Mexican markets are open to the elements, protected only by a corrugated metal roof.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration suspects this packing plant, its warehouse in McAllen, Texas, and a farm in Mexico are among the sources of the United States' largest outbreak of food-borne illness in a decade, which infected at least 1,440 people with a rare form of salmonella.
A plant manager confirmed to The Associated Press that workers handling chili peppers aren't required to separate them according to the sanitary conditions in which they were grown, offering a possible explanation for how such a rare strain of salmonella could have caused such a large outbreak.
The AP has found that while some Mexican producers grow fruits and vegetables under strict sanitary conditions for export to the U.S., many don't — and they can still send their produce across the border easily.Neither the U.S. nor the Mexican governments impose any safety requirements on farms and processing plants. That includes those using unsanitary conditions — like those at Agricola Zaragoza — and brokers or packing plants that mix export-grade fruits and vegetables with lower-quality produce.
In fact, the only thing a Mexican company needs to do to sell produce to the United States is to register online.

Their fruits and vegetables don't take our jobs for really cheap. It is okay if they get a passport and come over, but not if they just sneek over. Anyway their fruits and vegetables are good. |

Double standard on the politician's part!
Now that the immigration laws took place, a lot more US Farms are either shutting down or moving to Mexico where the workers are without immigration issues. They can't find US Citizens to do the work and it's scary because we do not have a say on what goes on with our food supply until we all end up getting sick. We have a Farm Labor crisis because of this. We need to allow Mexican immigrants to continue working in our farms, and allow a broader guest worker program too. Amnesty would have never been created if this wasn't seen back in the day, but today's Policiticans are keeping hush hush about it because it's an election year.

farmers short on migrant workers move to Mexico
MEXICALI, Mexico, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Like other California vegetable growers, Larry Cox oversees hundreds of Mexican farm workers picking green onions, asparagus and cauliflower in the fertile Colorado River valley.
But this farm is not in California, where illegal immigration raids are causing labor shortages and strict environmental regulations are increasing costs.
"We are basically being regulated out of business," said farmer Steve Scaroni, who moved 20 percent of his operations to Mexico's central state of Guanajuato in 2006.
Farmers in the United States, some worried about unfair competition, question Mexican food safety standards. A deadly 2003 hepatitis A outbreak in Pennsylvania was traced back to green onions shipped from Mexico.

SAVE U.S. FARMS AND HELP PROTECT THE SAFETY AND CERTAINTY OF OUR FOOD SUPPLY.
Without an adequate agriculture workforce, we are in serious danger of losing control of our food supply—many of our nation’s farm families will fail, U.S. farms will foreclose and will continue to move labor-intensive agriculture production offshore. This will result in the loss of tens of thousands of American Jobs and could compromise the abundance, quality and safety of the food we and our families consume. |

Trade agreements, such as those that permit Mexican produce to be sold in the United States, are separate from immigration laws. This is why produce gets in and people are not supposed to be let in without proper admission. But, if you think about it, the produce is not allowed in without inspection either, so there's not a whole lot of difference if you view it like that.
We do grow some of our own produce. But we don't always grow enough of what our country uses up, therefore we import some produce. There is nothing hypocritical about it. Also, we have produced plenty of our own outbreaks of various bacterial and viral problems, so we cannot pass general blame on imported produce for that. |

Pack your stuff and come down to Texas. There are plenty of farmers down here that would love to put you to work. The answer is easy: money. It's cheaper to buy produce from Mexico because their labor costs are lower than ours. And why is that? *GASP* because we don't want illegals coming over here working for substandard wages so guess what? The prices will be much higher. |
