hahaha what the hell? Asians and Europeans (especially Italians!) never learn the language! I'm hispanic, I know English and I don't even live in the U.S!! You people, for whatever reason, like to criticize Latinos! I don't know what the hell y'all problem is, but chill beaches!

English is 1 of if not the hardest language in the WORLD to learn. plus they want to stick to their hispanic roots

Because in most hispanic families, spanish is the language spoken in the household. Many figure the kids will learn english in school. Some, not all, have parents that work up to two jobs and have therefore leaves the parents not much time to learn english. Therefore they dont have the time to teach their kids either.

I don't know what part of the U.S. you are from, but where I'm from your stereotype is really ignorant and racial. Many mexicans I meet, who enter this country legally and are really successful business people, speak English. I also know middle class Mexicans who put tremendous effort and have good gramar. The community colleges in my area are full with eager Mexicans (who work, pay taxes and pay for their community college courses) who are really advancing in English and taking on courses to acquire a good career.

Maybe if you move out of your redneck town, travel to a highly populated and diverse area in the U.S. your opinion will change.

I'm really sorry for you and your lack of opportunities, your ignorance, and I hope you learn to accept and love all people, as this is God's way.

How many languages do you speak? Its hard learning any language. I wouldn't want to say that Hispanics have difficulty learning English. I wouldn't want to make any racial comment like that.

You seem uneccessarily angry but you do make a point. A community comes together more easily if there is a common language. I believe that any language can and should be learned if you live in a community where there is a clear majority.

I live in Vancouver Canada and there are Chinese here who have been here for generations who don't speak a word of English (or French, we have two official languages) For the most part it doesn't bother me, but there is soemthing to be said for being able to communicate with your neighbor.

I also believe that its personal choice. If you choose not to speak the common language then you have to live with the consequences and shouldn't demand language rights in your own language.

However we also have to take into consideration the fact that there are inalienable rights that extend beyond language and we have a duty as human beings to be kind and sensitive to the needs of our fellow human beings.

English is a tough language, mainly because words mean many different things in it. "Run" has well over 100 different definitions.

Think about it. Run for office, Running water, Run in a race, Runny nose...

I DO believe you need to learn English to be a resident of this country, just like I would expect to have to learn Spanish to be a resident in Mexico. This duel language thing is total crap.

Or is Mexico putting up Spanish/English signs at this point? I must have missed that.

all of my Hispanic friends speak English, in fact they probably think I'm dumb because my Spanish is so bad. Where do you live? I think in more rural areas Hispanics do harder jobs that don't require much education so they simply aren't challenged to learn it.

Because not only are the words different, but their sentence structure is entirely different, since it is based on Latin which usually puts the verb last.

I agree and disagree with you on this matter.
Agree: most Hispanics even though they are US born did not learn English at home. Majority of them the parents do not speak English therefore they can not teach their children English. I too went to school and interacted with other students who's parents were from other countries and I find them to pick up English faster than other Hispanic students.
Disagree: I'm Latino and I only speak English. i could not speak or write in Spanish.

those particular ones that live here for years -don't learn English because they don't want to... not because they can't.... most other immigrants came here and wanted to assimilate into the American society.. they wanted to learn the language and culture and blend in with their new country.the ones you are talking about want to retain their own culture and language and make Americans learn their language and cater to them... the parents don't bother learning the language, so they only speak to their children in their own language.... the kids get to our schools and now have to learn English.. or be in special classes with English as their second language...because of a preponderance of this attitude Spanish has become our second language....everything is translated into Spanish... this never happened with Italians, Asians, Africans, French etc... they all learned English so they could be a welcomed part of our society , function well in our country,and not stand out as a separate culture... there is nothing wrong with preserving your own individual culture / ethnic group/ customs and language... but if your going to live in a country where the language is predominately English.... you should at least learn the language.

Most people who migrate are the ones who didnt 'make it' at home. Im just assuming that the ones with the most potential found a good living at home. Thats not to say that all immigrants are loosers or anything. Some of them are very motivated to support their family to the point that they will go to a foreign nation where they are strangers in a strange land, live with six other dudes in a one bed-room apartment and work their butts off. I knew this kid, must've been 16 or 17 but would swear that he was 18, who worked at the same restaurant that I did. At one point he held down three (!) full-time jobs. This lasted for two weeks until finally he had to quit one so that he could get some sleep.
Uh, give them two or three generations and their kids and grandkids will pick up American English from their friends and school-mates.
