Why is it that just because you hear someone speaking Spanish?

It isn't arrogant and spoiled. If you are near someone that doesn't speak English, it is rude. It is like saying they are not important enough to be included in your conversation. There are some things you expect in your country, and that is the ability to communicate with your fellow citizens. It isn't just here. Take 30 million English only people to Mexico, and see how they react. They would start shooting. If you want to speak Spanish only, then that is your right, but don't expect any respect from people that don't speak Spanish. Who wants a friend that can and does hide certain things in conversation? It is rude. Someone doesn't want your friendship, and now you understand why.

Its really funny when they are speaking spanish with each other and think you are a gringo and don't know what they are saying. Its done often to maintain privacy but is percieved as being deceptive or rude. Don't assume they are talikig about you but sometimes.....they are.

When someone is speaking Spanish, I do understand them. I also understand that they are speaking Spanish as opposed to English whenever possible because they feel more comfortable doing so. I do not have a problem with people speaking more that one language.

Arrogance truly comes in when people come here from other countries and expect their host nation to cater to their language instead of trying to assimilate and adopt - at least in part - the language and culture of the land.

When in Rome, Do it the way you did it back home...uh...wait...let me think...how'd that go?

Personally, it does not bother me in the least when I hear people speaking Spanish or any other language in a public place. I don't care - heck, I can't understand deaf people when they speak sign language! Doesn't hurt me in the least. I'm not interested in the conversations of others when I am not a part of that conversation - doesn't concern me and it's none of my business. I don't know why that bothers other people. All that bothers me is if they are trying to communicate with me - they need to be able to speak English. I also do not feel that we should accommodate them with signage in their language or having to select "1" for English when calling a US government office. Government forms should NOT be replicated in other languages - it should be up to the individual to locate someone for translation of the forms and assistance in completing them. It should be up to the individual to provide a translator whenever they need it, I don't think this should be paid for by the citizens. If individual businesses choose to cater to other languages, I feel that is their prerogative. If Americans do not want to frequent those businesses, that is also their free choice. But, if I go into a restaurant or other business in the USA, I should be able to be communicated with in fluent English. When I apply for a job in the USA, it should not be a requirement of that job that I speak another language. Our schools should not have to require teachers to speak Spanish or any other language besides English. If children are here for whom English is a second language, then it should be up to their parentss to ensure that their children get ESL and it should NOT be paid for by the taxpaying citizens of the USA.

In fact, I believe immigration must be legal only, so that the country can decide who gets in and what skills we need and where we need them. When illegal immigration occurs, they tend to go wherever they want and oftentimes overwhelm certain areas to the point where the social services and infrastructure cannot bear it. And, one of the requirements of "legal" immigration should be at least a rudimentary comprehension of and ability to speak English and with the requirement that the new immigrant must ensure they continue to learn English on their own initiative and with progressive tests to be taken at points in time after they arrive in the USA, to show their dedication and motivation to learn the language and assimilate.

Most immigrants that came to this country, spoke their native tongue at home and English outside their home, now the illegals that are her are arrogant and disrespectful and show no signs of etiquette. But I really don't care what they do, as long as they stay away from my neighborhood, I would like a few more years before I have to start living in a dump.

i don't have a problem with them speaking it to each other but its when we have to print everything twice and when they do it in a disrespectful way and i hate it when they do know English but act like they don't ''me no understand'' and then some other time you will see them speaking English have you met any that has done this pancha its happened to me a few times.

In my opinion, I don't care what language your are speaking when your just around people that speak that language too. But when they are around other people, it is disrespectful to the people around that cannot understand what you are saying. I used to work with a band that was from french canada. When they wanted to say maybe something private and didnt want me to hear it, they would politely tell me, hey were gonna speak in french for a minute, sorry man. Id be like cool man. People just need to be respectful to people, on both ends.

America is not Europe. America is not Mexico. America is not any other country below the equator or any other country where multiple languages are spoken. America has only one common language, and that language is English and we will not stand to have Spanish shoved down our throats.

If I came to your home and you spoke Spanish, that is one thing. If your in public the common language is English.

As hard as it is to fathom this, as I am begining to understand from all the posts, but you have to understand America will fight for her culture and their language and their flag. To oppose that is an insult in our country at some level more than others - just like if I went to Mexico or any other country and found out, I think it's Italy, to count your change in a store is an insult, we may both agree that when your in another country you have to respect that country.

The more and more it becomes Mexico and the less and less it becomes America, the more and more trouble we will both have. Bush will have his day for his political sins.

You may not think we will defend these things - but look at the pools, look at what people are trying to tell you - even if you were the future which is not true, the future isn't here. We are still here and it is today and we have a right to fight to shape the future of our country and no foreign nationals have the moral right to force themselves on us.

You may call us names because you don't agree with our ways - but we are still America and it won't change, even if Congress passed a law that says otherwise.

I don't think most people care unless your rude about it. If you can talk both-fine-if you talking in front of someone else and you know English-speak it. Translation for anyone is fine. But we have gone through this many times. English is the Language here-try to learn it and we shouldn't have to cater to another language-how fair is that? And we have to pay extra. One language unites--two divided-Always-history.

My children are Hispanic, and I understand Spanish language due to living in South Texas the past fifteen years. It was offensive to me and my children to hear Mexican people jabbering away in English but switch when I walked up with my children...how foolish of them to assume I couldn't understand what they were saying.

How would you react if the tables were turned?If millions of Americans entered Mexico or where ever and spoke English all the time and took your jobs for less money and used your medical system and didn't pay for it and began sendng their kids to your tax payer funded schools to the point where 70 to 80 percent of the kids in the class in some areas didn't speak your language thus making it harder for your children to get a good education? Then they started to call you a racist because you began to call for your government to do something about it. (and by the way illegally living in Mexico is considered a Felony punishable by a minimum of 2yrs in Prison.) If they could speak your language but didn't use it because they don't want to because they had an arrogant cultural bias and why should they they have taken over large sections of the town where you grew up and because all the people spoke english and all the signs were also in english a language that you didn't speak or read. And then they acted as ifthey thought they were better and used phrases like The Race (LA Raza) Wouldn't you get upset ? you damn right you would and that is why? I find it amazing that thousandes or Vietnamese have been able to learn and use english , HEll my 75 yr old mother in law from Cambodia who never spoke english before she came here, Legally I might add ,can speak, write and understand english. And Cambodian is not a ltin based language as both Spanish and English are. So maybe that is why. And don't assume it is just the language that people don't like if you want to speak Spanish fine but do us the favor of learning and using english do you how arrogant it sounds when you are at work and use spanish to talk to your friends inf ront of others who don't? Have you ever been in the situation where some one spoke a language you didn't understand if front of you and they knew you didn't? You would assume the same thing in Mexico or where ever if they used english.
