Why isn't Dog the Bounty Hunter top news?

Hi,

The show Dog the Bounty Hunter. The gentlemen spends his life capturing criminals and drug users. He travels to Mexico to capture a man who skipped town, brings him back to the United States to stand trial.

The Mexican Government says he broke the law by doing that. So our Government handed him over to the Authorities. Why would our Government surrender one of the good guys? Why is this not top news...

Our nation needs to hear about this and try to get the Dog Hunter back in the United States. He is now sitting in a Mexican jail and who knows what all the criminals there are doing to him. They all consider him an enemy because he spends his life putting criminals behind bars.

I would like some feedback...please

Thank you,
Rhonda Pavone

Hi Rhonda,

I'd like to make sure all the facts are correct, and first must point out that Dog has not yet been handed over to the Mexican authorities. He was arrested and detained by US Federal Marshalls. He was granted bail, which means he can go to work and sleep at home, but must not be out late at night.

The USA and Mexico have an agreement called extradition, which means if one country has a ciminal that the other country needs back, the countries will hand them over.

Dog is being accused of breaking Mexican law, which forbids bounty hunting. He was charged with this crime in 2003 in Mexico after he apprehended Andrew Luster. He posted bond in Mexico and left the country to come back to the USA. This violated his bail conditions in Mexico and he has been an international fugitive since that time. It is now up to the US government whether or not they will honor the extradition treaty with Mexico.

Duane "Dog" Chapman is a reformed criminal, he was charged in 1977 with being an accomplice to murder. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison, but released early. His wife Beth has in the past been charged with forgery and extortion.

As for why this is not "top news", I have seen it on CNN, FOX, and A&E, so it does have National attention, but please be aware that there is a war in Iraq, and also in Afghanistan so this may not remain in the news for long

I cannot BELIEVE the nerve of some people! Here you have a guy who had a bad life, and turned it all around, devoting his LIFE to the law, and people are coming down on him for doing the right thing!? He went down there to capture a serial RAPIST!! Luster had 86 counts of rape! Imagine this man preying on your daughter, mother, wife, girlfriend, or even YOU (women)!! Wouldn't you feel safer knowing this man was behind bars, and not out hunting down more victims!? Any woman who has been raped should be singing Dog's praises! My fiance' was raped, and that guy got away with it!! I was so outraged, I wanted to go hunt him down and kill him myself! So instead of becoming a vigilante, I am studying to become a cop, and I hope and pray that I too have the courage to do what is right, no matter who gets bent out of shape!! If the US government opposed the manner in which Dog captured Luster, why did they take Luster back into custody, instead of letting him return to Mexico? Doing the right thing isn't always the popular way, but if you are a good person, it MUST be done no matter WHAT!!

I totally agree with you. This is absolutely insane.

I think Mexico can have him only if they agree to take their people back with him and keep them there.

It is crap but if he broke the law. But of coarse the illegals get away with it.

Dog the Bounty Hunter Special appeared on A&E last night. Critics may dismiss his plight because they see his show as a novelty. But I say to you this is of great import because there are three men’s lives at stake. This certainly deserves the attention of the public and the US government.

I am so incensed at his arrest and possible extradition back to Mexico. The whole thing is disgusting.

Duane “Dog” Chapman’s life and the life of son Leland & brother Tim hang in the balance over a minor misdemeanor – the capture of Andrew Luster – notorious rapist now serving 124 year sentence in prison.

While in custody in a US federal detention facility, their lives were threatened by familiar faces and other inmates seeking revenge for his bounty hunting profession. The Mexican prison’s conditions would be worse and they would most likely not live to serve the 4 month to 4 year sentence that misdemeanor carries.
“…. Mexico routinely declines to extradite suspects facing life in prison or the death penalty. Mexico's Supreme Court, which favors rehabilitation and views capital punishment and no-parole sentences as cruel, has blocked numerous extraditions until U.S. authorities agreed to lower the potential punishment a suspect faced in an American court.”
“Mexico itself has a mixed track record for returning fugitives. In the case of American citizens who flee to Mexico, it can take U.S. officials months or even years to get a fugitive returned if they have a good lawyer.”

I hope the Department of Justice does not let the American people down and three of its very fine citizens that need its help. Keep the Dog Free!!!!

This is the second time Dog has been arrested in Mexico for bounty hunting. He doesn't have the power of arrest in Mexico and detailing someone illegally and spiriting them from one country to another is not only kidnapping, but violates international law. Luster, regardless of how heinous a person he is, is still entitled to an extradition hearing. Dog knew what he did was wrong and chose to risk it for a high profile arrest.

However, can I suggest you remove your question and report it without the personal information. I had a cyberstalker turn into a real stalker who showed up on my doorstep and I only hinted to the town Ilived in and where I worked, he put everything else together. If you want to give your email be prepared for that, but unless you want people to know where you live or to get you number so they can call you 24/7 I suggest for your personal safety and sanity that you repost this question without the personal information.

I don't understand, why this happens, The Mexican Govt. would
tell us where to stick it, if we asked for a person from their country.

Dog and his family are really getting rail roaded. He is a wonderful man. He is now back in Hawaii. But all 3 of them are out on bail, with ankle bracelets. The can not leave the state. They are under house arrest until, they are all returned to Mexico by our Government. What ticks me off is he is one of the good guys. And here our government is not backing him. But they do nothing about the illegal aliens we have here from Mexico, who run drugs, and live off of the American people. We got to meet him and his beautiful wife Beth last year when we were on vacation in Hawaii. And they were the most gracious down to earth and friendly people that I have ever meet. This is a true shame, what he and his family are being put through. Please visit his web site. www.dogthebountyhunter.com
They have several postings, on ways you can help by contacting officials that might help him. You can also donate to his legal fee's

Actually dog, his son and his brother were released on bond once again, this time they never made it to Mexico before Beth intervened. They are basically on home detention and no date has been set.

You can get more information at his website dogthebountyhunter.com They have lots of contact information on who to ***** to. A&E had a special on the other night called "the family speaks out" and it had a lot of good information and background info on it. You should try to catch it reruned over the weekend.

Also the guy that they went to mexico to get was a serial rapist who druged his victims and taped it. He is also the son of the man who owns Max Factor make-up. I think we should have a nation wide ban on all maxfactor products. because no doubt that is who is causing all these problems. In the history of the US I don't think we have ever sent one of our guys to mexico, never mind they are just getting charged with a petty crime that even mexico wouldn't pursue with its people.

Sabrina
You are right. Even though it is illegal in Mexico they shouldn't have handed him over. Mexico doesn't punish citizens for breaking our laws. (illegals) Bush is a pussey.

Duane Dog Chapman is one of the good guys. I don't understand why they are treating him and his family this way? He took off the streets a really bad serial rapist that fled into Mexico to escape justice. Dog and his men brought him to justice and now they want to punish him for it..
Everyone needs to write/call gov. officials. The Chapman family really need your help...
There is one contact that can make a big difference in Dog's release listed below:

Condaleeza Rice - its her decision..

I have to point out that putting all your personal info like that on the Internet is not a good idea! You just gave everyone in the world your address and phone number!!! Anyway, to your question....when you leave the US and enter into another country for whatever reason, you MUST follow their laws. You are no longer protected under US law. What he did was against Mexican law. Think about if it were reversed and a Mexican came into the US and broke a law (I'm not talking about illegal immigration), we wouldn't just let it slide because they're Mexican not American. We would arrest them and they would go to prison if convicted. You have to respect other countries laws. He is a good guy in getting criminals off the streets, but he's not above the law.

Mariposa
uummm... he's a good guy who catches the bad people who skipped out on their bail. He posted bail in Mexico and then skipped out on his bail before the court date. Wouldn't that make him a bad guy? I enjoy the show and all, but it is a little contradictory what he did. He probably wouldn't be in as much trouble if he wouldn't have kidnapped an heir with a lot of money.

He did break Mexican law, however I agree with you. He actually did not go to a Mexican jail, he was arrested by Federal Marshals in Hawaii and taken to a Federal Prison. In order for the Mexican goverment to extradite him they have to petition. In my opinion, we should boycott Max Factor because it was their demented family member that started this mess.

Bounty Hunting is against the law in Mexico. He right now in his home in Hawaii. His brother, son, and the Dog are awaitng trial for the case in Mexico. He probably have to pay a big fine. Remember the Dog post a big bond for Luster.

ravenmo2003
First of all dog is not sitting in a Mexican jail right now when he was arrested last week he was placed in a Hawaii federal prison. If he is extradited then yes he will be serving his time in a Mexican prison.I really enjoy watching his show, but he did break the law and must be accountable for his actions the same as anyone else.He keeps saying the reason he went to Mexico to capture Andrew Luster, was to get this rapist off the street .I also keep hearing how much of a hero he is for doing so but the fact of the matter is Luster had a $1 million dollar bail that he skipped out on.Dog was expecting to get a large percentage of that money for capturing him somewhere around $250,000.Due to the fact that he captured him illegally he got nothing. Now do you think if he knew he would end up with nothing that he still would have tracked him down,I think not

4mika
it just goes to show that goverment controls the media. they print, air what they are told to and no more. I think that if he walked into mexico and captured Osama things would be alot different. But since it was a an every day criminal that he brought in they figure what the hell its our offering of peace for all the mexicains we've kicked back across the boarder.

The United States has an extradition treaty with Mexico. If, underscore if, he violated Mexican law while pursuing someone then he should be arrested. Mexico is not bound by decisions in US courts. In this case "good guy" is relative to jurisdiction.

I don't know if Mexico has bounty hunters but if they did, and the situation was reversed, wouldn't you expect the Mexican government to hand him over to the US authorities?

He knew what the law was and he decided to break it. I'm sure that by now, he's wearing crayon makeup and having his long hair pulled while he's being made love to in the prison weight room.

isabow27
He broke the law.

BTW, I can't believe you've actually given your name, address and phone number out. What a stupid thing to do!

Big Bobby Clobber
This dude took a chance by violating Mexican law. Being a bounty hunter is illeagal in most civilised countries. This guy is getting what he deserves, no more no less.

And by the way, it is very stupid to post your name, address and phone number on a public forum. Perhaps some of Dog's victims will look for one of his fans to harass.

pops
Who cares?,the show wasn't worth watching and he ain't worth mentioning.

Bambi slayer
Because Dog broke the law. Being a bounty hunter is illegal in Mexico. He thought he was above the law and now is getting put back in his place. Funny, how if you watch his show, he never goes after really bad folks. 99% are just minor offenders. I would love to see him try and capture a few crips or bloods. Like that will ever happen.
