ENGLISH HAS BEEN THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE FOR SOME TIME NOW. I THINK YOU ARE TOTALLY CORRECT. IF YOU WANT TO EMIGRATE TO ANOTHER NATION, IT WOULD BENEFIT YOU TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE. DON'T EXPECT THEM TO LEARN YOURS JUST BECAUSE YOU WALKED THRU THE DOOR OR SWAM ACROSS THE BORDER. |

that is crazy. at least you will know what they are saying about you. it does seriously help your resume anymore. |

Who said we're being forced to know Spanish?I live in the U.S. and I'm not being forced to learn Spanish. |

You should learn Spanish. I did. You only say that because it's your point of view. Since I'm bilingual, I'm a more valuable employee, and it's great. |

I don't agree with that policy but the company has the right to give preference to employees who can speak another language if they believe it will benefit the company. The only option employees have is to seek employment elsewhere if they don't like the policy. |

It is getting harder and harder in my area to get a job unless you were bilingual, Spanish & English. Pitiful. |

After all, they came here; we didn't go there.
The bosses, at my father's company, recently informed the management that if they want to advance within the company, they would be required to learn Spanish. One man stood up and asked, "Why can't they learn English?"
Why should US citizens be forced to learn Spanish? Last time I checked, we didn't go to Mexico to steal jobs and I'm sure if we did, they wouldn't be learning English to accommodate us.

FIXED by an illegal. Now, go learn proper English. |

No one is going to be forced to learn any other language. Knowing other languages is a good idea especially when a person goes to college. I speak two languages and my husband speaks four fluently and no one can accuse him of being ignorant. |

You shouldn't. Although I certainly agree that knowing more than one language is beneficial and rewarding, I do not agree that people who refuse to assimilate to the language of this country should get to choose that language for you. There are, after all, hundreds of languages in the world, and learning any one of them will make you bilingual. |

If they think our country is so great, learn OUR language! |

If you dont want to you dont have to after all the official language of this country is English, but see the more knowledge you have more power to you. I know 5 languages, Enlgish,Farsi,French,Polish, and Spanish. I never plan on living in Iran,or France, but I speak Polish with my husband. Anyways the point I am trying to make the more languages you know more power for you. |

Because America would rather bend it's back to the illegals and try not to offend anybody rather than having some balls and enforcing our laws, including having to learn English. |

US Citizens should not be forced to learn Spanish!! They crawled over and under OUR boarder they need to learn English and our customs. |

I hear you! I live near Canada, I'd rather speak French personally. I took French in high school and loved it. It's a much nicer language to listen to in my opinion. So why does it have to be Spanish we Americans should be forced to speak. My Husband's family came from Italy, but they learned to speak English when they got here. It's not fair to the other nationalities living here, Chinese, Italians etc. we don't cater to them so why should we cater to Mexicans. |

Yes! You have a great point! I totally agree! I think that maybe if people that speak Spanish are coming here, then they should learn English so that they can teach English-speaking people Spanish for those that want to learn Spanish. Eh...maybe? What do you think? |

If you live anywhere in the Southwest, Spanish was the language before English.
The majority of the people in the US would prefer not to learn more than just English but in other parts of the world people speaks many languages.
Accept the fact that people in this country speak Spanish and other languages! Don't learn Spanish if you want to get left behind.
Oh, by the way, most immigrants who have been here any significant amount of time do learn English, and most of their children speak English, too. |

I agree with you about language.
I beleive that if you immigrate to any country, you should learn to speak the language of the country. That should be one of the first things a person should do.
I believe I have said that my father immigrated legally from Romania. He came here speaking English, as well as Romanian and Rromanes. I think he spoke a few more as well. I know that he never expected people in America to understand either Romanian or Rromanes.
I lived in San Pablo, California. In that area, at that time (late 90's to 2000) many of the employers such as McDonalds would not hire you if you were not bilingual in Spanish and English.
I understand why they do it, especially in areas like San Pablo, but I think it should not need to be done.
I also agree with the people who say that such as voter's information should not be in Spanish or any other language than English. |

I agree with you 1000%. It is a travesty what is happening in the US with Spanish being almost everywhere. There are Spanish TV and radio stations, web sites have links to translate that page into Spanish, telephone prompts in Spanish. Schools, police departmetns and hospitals have to take money that they couild use for other resources and to teach their employees Spanish! It just doesn't end!!!
What about all the millions of immigrants who came to the US?? They adapted to the American way of life and learned to speak English!! Why can't these illegals do the same???????????? |

I agree with you 100%!!! Not to mention I hate it when mexican people come up to me and start talking to me in spanish and I tell them I don't know it cause I was born here. The get all offended and tell me well I should know it what's wrong with my parents...How dumb is that!
Sorry to rant... |

because all god damn hispanics are trying to make america into their crappy countries "that there so proud of" (I see this puerto rican in NYC with a flag used as a cape and wearing face paint). Trying to put mexican flags near american ones, singing the national anthem in spanish. It makes me sick! My grandparents from poland had to learn to speak english, the businesses in NYC they went to weren't teaching their employees polish even though millions of poles were there in the early 1900s. Now we see all these ILLEGAL mexicans coming here, wanting "rights" |

You may want to learn English yourself sweetheart.
"Management at my fathers company recently informed there Bosses..." should be "Management at my father's company recently informed their bosses..."
In order to understand homophones such as 'their, there, they're' you may want to hit up an ESL class with those immigrants you say aren't learning English. |

You shouldnt, as newcomers we have to respect + english in my personal opinion is the BEST and most EVOLVED language in the entire world, so to my fellow Hispanics and newcomers please...RESPECT and you will get FURTHER. |

We are not forced to learn Spanish but it would be a good idea for everyone to do so. The majority of people in the world are at least bi-lingual and those that are not are mostly American's. Would it suprise you to know that there are 3 times more people that speak English in China than there is in America? There are 6,912 known living languages in the world. You would think that we could at least learn more then one.
Look at the bright side, if you and a friend learned at least partially another language you two could talk to each other in front of others and no one would know what you were saying to each other. It can be fun to learn another language. |

it broadens your view of the world. Youll be able to go travel and be able to communicate with people. It is also looks good on college and job applications. People who can learn two or more languages do better in reading, writing, and artistic persuits. It is also shown that people who can speak two or more languages are better at retaining information and are generally smarter. |
