I would leave that question to be answered by a xenophobic know-nothing, usually they'll tell you why. Personally, I don't have a problem having Spanish as a second language at all. It's about time we had a second language if you ask me, we're the only country in the world arrogant enough to speak only English while you have other countries speaking 2, if not 3 different languages. |

There is absolutely no problem with any language being spoken in America. Just don't expect me to understand anything but English! |

You are free to speak any language you want, but 85% of Americans speak English. Our government does its business in English and English is the international language of business and money. I speak several different languages but in my business, I deal in English.
Canada is not a Spanish speaking nation, last lime I looked they were just as close to us as Mexico . In Canada they speak English except Quebec that has French as its provincial language.
South America doesn't surround the US get a map please. |

Because we don't even teach English right and if we want to impose a 2nd language we will simply mess them both up. But in all seriousness what you do is hurt the poorest of American's the worst; and sadly those who have difficulties learning are left behind. |

Those are two different questions. America's second language shouldn't be Spanish because over 200 languages are spoken here. English is the language we all speak to eachother in and that our laws are in, but in many enclaves the second (or even primary) language is neither English nor Spanish. It may be Polish, Russian, Korean, German, Chinese, etc.
Spanish being spoken here in itself isn't bad. However, in many areas you can scrape by (not successfully) never speaking English. That perpetuates both a sense of 'us v. them' and an underclass. |

I'm still hoping that 12 million Gaelic-speaking Irish will immigrate over in an armada and help me learn that language!!
We should encourage our kids to learn another language, but not for convenience of communicating with someone who has no interest in learning English.
Chinese or Arabic should be the languages encouraged because the world economy and diplomacy demand that . . . |

English should be recognized as the "Language" of the USA and the Government should operate with the Official Language, if private business wishes to expend time energy an resources to accommodate other languages it is their business, but it should not be subsidized or promoted by US Taxpayers. |

Because having any "second language" is a negative incentive to learning the first. |

Because there are alot of other people here and more and more second official, third official etc. languages just seperates people further. With everyone so different why is it so impossible to understand the need for atleast 1 way we can connect.....language. Pushing for a 2nd or 3rd or 4th language just increases discrimination, creates more confusion and expense for everyone at a time where we don't need it. We shouldn't be facing language barriers in our own country.....not to mention in just your own town or neighborhood and I'm not up to learning a new language with every new immigrant group that comes here and moves next door. It places undue burden on the citizens of this country as well as immigrants from other countries who are then forced to learn additional languages to just get by. Why make it worse? No one is saying people can't speak other languages. Just learn English so we can be on the same page. |

This is the U. S. A., its english, and english only. We do not want a second language. |

why should it? because 20 million Hispanics won't learn to speak and write in English?
What else should the U.S. change for them? the justice system? the tax system? the traffic laws?? |

The US is an English speaking country - always has been. Sure there were people speaking Spanish but that was BEFORE the US was a country.
It is insulting to our country and founding fathers to call Spanish an official language. If people are living here they should speak English. |

why should it be? English has been spoken sense English came to this country. we are to speak in the language the Constitution of the united states has been written in. they want to be here then let them learn English. if people want to learn Spanish as a second language then that's on them. |

Actually, I've been hoping more American's would learn proper English before we start taking on additional courses. |

honey, first let's try and have all these "English" speaking citizens learn some grammar and then we can impose some other language on them.... I am proud to know two languages fluently English and SPANISH (not spanisch like some of you idiots spell it) in fact right now i'm learning French as well, the more knowledge you have, the better person you become... I guess it's not an "official" second language but we all know it's here to stay!!!.... 8^) |

We should all just speak english. Why its not a spanish country. They played not part in the building of this fine land. They move in here and expect that they have it all no. as for a press 1 for english or 2 for spanisch leave and never come back is my thought. |

Bad enough everything in this country (signs, messages, public info) is now bi-lingual. Give me a break! Learn English, or go home. You think our ancestors didn't have to learn it to survive in the new world? |

When people have trouble communicating with each other, as a nation, you simply become weaker.
Not to mention the fact that you'll be creating a second class of citizen.
Look, in the US, our laws are written in English, our court rooms conduct their business in English, heck, the vast majority of businesses conduct their business in, you guessed it, English.
Rather than pander to people and encourage them to keep their language, why not help them assimilate into our culture? That's what made us great....... |

It is absolutely great if a person can speak a second or third language or even more. Our USA is made up of people from many nations who would like to have their home language spoken here so they can understand better. But ONE country language is about all an immigrant can handle at one time and it needs to be the language common to most of the people living here to satisfy their needs. |

Well for starters, our official language is English, yet we don't expect people to know any of it in order to be a citizen. So why should I be expected to learn the language of people coming over here. If you want Spanish as a second language, then go home and speak it. But don't expect your boss to understand you, Or the math teacher to speak it. I believe very strongly that the government should avoid using any other languages other then absolutely necessary, such as when filing for refugee status. If they were to only print stuff like tax forms in English then it would be necessary for immigrants to learn the language of the country. When I took my vacation in the Dominican, I learned (brushed up on) Spanish before I went, and spoke to the natives in Spanish, otherwise I would have been rude going to their country speaking a weird language and expecting them to accomodate me. An official language of a country is the language that is mostly spoken at the formation of that country by the people who formed the government. When this country succeeded from Britian we spoke English. We wrote and write all of our government documents (including the constitution) in English. But because Spanish-speaking countries have done so horribly to make suitable lives for their inhabitants, we have to amend our country's language. That is the problem. |

why should it? Is America a spanish speaking country. what about other nationals in the US like Arabs, Africans, etc. I believe it will be highly unfair on others as they have equal rights also. |

It pretty much is the second language. Call any company and you get a Spanish option, go to any government office, and there is a Spanish speaking person available to help you. I do not have a problem with Spanish being spoken in the US, I do however think that English should be learned by immigrants as well. After all, we are an English speaking nation. |

The problem is that this has been an English speaking country since it was founded, though we are surrounded by Spanish speaking countries, and more than 80% of this continent including South America speaks Spanish, so a second language, why not. |

We should all speak Spanish, the language of the conquistadors, the first to conquer the Americas and annihilate the native civilizations.
It is such a proud history and should be preserved in the language of the original conquerors of the new world.
Also, it is the language of all the extremely prosperous countries to our south that every one in this country emulates. we should aspire to be the same intellectual, gifted, innovative culture, as our southern neighbors.
And look at how well it has served the Spanish in Europe. They are truly world leaders and should be immortalized by learning their language. |

America's second language is Spanish. If you look up info about the US in many factbooks, they list English and Spanish as languages spoken. I don't have a problem with it. |

Legal citizens got pissed when the illegals started marching for their rights...Otherwise, truth be told, Spanish IS America's second language... |

If legal visitors want to speak spanish in their own homes, its their right. If I lived in a foreign county I would want to learn their language, afterall, I would be a visitor and want to show them respect. In America, outsiders take advantage of us, not only by showing disrespect, or flying our flag upside down, they take our hard earned money that our government passes out like toilet paper. I really don't blame them, I blame our disfunctional government for allowing the downfall of this country all for the almighty vote to keep these over paid career politicans in office.. I live in the midwest and not along the border and don't want any part of it. Pushing one for english....is a disgrace to me the American people...Don't tread on me!!!! |

I think anyone who move to another country should learn the language of that country. That is the right thing to do. However, denying students the opportunity of learning another languages is really wrong not only because that will close the opportunity of having an open worldwide mind ( needed in this competitive world ) but also because that won't let students become smarter due to the lack of neurological connections that won't be activated in the brain if a secod language is not learned. The future of the world requires all nations to work together and understand each other. Learning a another language is part of our contribution to that better world. This is not about illegals immigrants, this is not about not respecting The United States laws, this is about finding that equilibrium that will make a better future for our families. Everybody should learn different languages and learn to appreciate and respect other cultures. America respects others and others respect America. |
