I'm am studying my notes for my German American class. I can't find a specific answer. All I know is that this decade stood out way more than other decades.

Allot of Germans and English as well got sick and tired of serving in there Kings armed forces, mandatory in most cases and shortage of living space and our rail roads in the US were doing allot of heavy recruiting in Europe to entice settlers to move on to railroad land and farm making the railroads more viable. |

The German Princely States had finally been united to form Germany. The people were released from the bondage of Serfdom and with limited knowledge of the world around them, figured Serfdom could return in the blink of an eye.
But there was a new found sense of freedom.. a canted eye on the future of Germany, and a bit of wealth to support a venture to the new world if they choose.
The Iron Chancellor was running the Country in 1880. Bismark was actually a pretty good leader, but he was very willing to fight a war to defend the rights of the newly formed German States. So the Germans were looking at the Kaiser and Bismark, and they figured their chances of seeing a war were rather high, and when you served in that Infantry, duty was very, very harsh. 1876 came and the Franco Prussian War took place.
For those who went to the University, they knew Britain had something like the same monetary reserves as France and Germany combined. But France and Germany were becoming distant for a number of reasons, and the University Students were reasonably sure Germany would not do well in their competition with France and England. Clearly, in the past, the German people paid a staggering price for the wars fought in Europe with town after town in Germany burned to the ground and the people raped, and raped again. Nothing indicated remorse on the matter, and I think it all got together and suggested to the Germans who left the lure of the New World was a place to live a peaceful, safe and free lives.
An interesting reference.. and think of the New World as being without all the social encumbrances that are described in the article.
