Well if you are taking about way back in the 1800's basically most of them were not much higher than slaves. They came to Canada looking for a new life and most of the were worked to death. They did jobs that others wouldn't do like build our railway. Cheap, disposable labour my friend and sadly, many of our immigrants today are look at the same way. Cheap labour who will do jobs than many Canadian will not do such as work in our fast food joints or clean up after us.

If you look at the size of Canada you will see that there is room for a great many immigrants. In the 1700s and early 1800s a lot of immigrants settled in Upper and Lower Canada but didn't venture too far west. With the railway completed across Canada a lot of immigrants came to Canada and started farms on the prairies. Canada is still underpopulated.
