i'd have to agree with you on this one. if i was going to move to china, i'd learn enough chinese to communicate at least on the basic levels. |

Because they don't have to. |

It's a combination of laziness and not being required to learn it. When they go to get their drivers license they can take the test in spanish, when they do anything government related, they can do it in spanish when they're working the freakin' drive through at mcdonalds they can speak spanish. It's ridiculous I'm with you on this. I live in the southwest and feel like i live in mexico-I can't stand it!! Being in America, we should have everything in English and English only! If people can't understand it they can go back to their country and speak their native language there. |

To lazy. Gee, would they learn Engish if we were to move to Mexico? |

Wow, a lot of ideas. I wish this thing would let us comment on all the answers.
I personally think most of them don't want to accept our culture. They want the freedoms of the US, but nothing else. Many would rather make it a new Mexico.
Some do learn English. And some learn it and then pretend they don't so as to get over on things.
I think most people wouldn't mind helping legal immigrants learn English. And its good to learn some Spanish just to be a little culturally diverse. But I personally resent having our taxes spent to print IRS and other government documents in languages other than English. That is just a crutch that continues to allow them not to melt into America.
Find some of those bi-lingual accountants, lawyers, etc to help them with the English documents. And when they do finally learn English, they can make 20% more then us because they are bi-lingual and they can help the next wave of LEGAL immigrants.
And for the person who said we don't speak Indian. My grandfather is 100% American Indian. Unfortunately our cultures clashed and we ended up at war. The difference between them and the Mexicans, is we don't collect welfare or free services from the Indians. If we were begging to be part of their reservation, then I think we'd be expected to learn their language and follow their rules. |

A lot of minority groups have everything they need in their own language, such as shopping, friends, and even television, which is why some go so long without learning the language. I know a Hispanic person who was born in the USA, but she was born in Spanish Harlem, and as a result has a heavy Spanish accent. I do agree that the first thing one should do in a new country is learn the language. It keeps them from being under a veil, as it were. I mean, I've been to some stores in some neighborhoods where no one spoke English... |

I agree that they should learn english. A lot of them don't know where to turn to learn the language. |

Is no necessary everything is in Spanish, you notice Q&A, USA en espanol? |

Yes. I agree it would be easier for them to learn English than you learning Spanish. If you feel you don't need to learn their language I guess they feel they don't need to speak with anyone who speaks English either. |

They are probably trying, but it sounds like you are not willing to help them, so you have no reason to b*tch about it. It is not that easy to learn another language, especially if you have 2 or 3 jobs. |
|

Kikyo
|
I completely agree that they should learn English. I can't even get a job in my own hometown because of the fact that they require that anyone who applies for a job has to be at least conversational level Spanish or better.
They came here, why should we cater to them? If we went to Mexico, they wouldn't cater to us, they would expect us to learn the language. |

The most logical answer is the fact our government gives them no incentive to learn it. Think about that one. |

America does not have an official language any more than it has an official religion.
That said, most Hispanic-Americans do want to learn English. I suggest you try volunteering as a teacher assistant to a community program which teaches English as a Second Language to help those who are inclined to learn the language. You will be surprised how hard some of them are trying to learn. |

ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR REASON FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT LEARN OTHER LANGUGES IS THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO TALK IN THE SAME LANGUAGE AND IT IS NOT NESSESARY TO LREARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE.
IF SOME ONE NEED TO LEARN IT CAN LEARN VERY EASYLY AND QUICKLY . |

Rather than fretting about them, why can't we as English speakers help them to learn the language? Some of them don't even understand the culture. I think we should be more open to the fact that they do the kind of labor we wouldn't be caught dead in most of the time and give them the respect they deserve...and help with English when they need it. Never know, they might learn the language that way too. |

Hmmm....let's ask the Indians....since we all speak thier languages ya know. |

I really couldn't tell you. Maybe English is too hard for them to learn, or they don't want to learn it... it could be any reason, or no reason at all. |

i love how this question sets them off just ask them why doesn't anyone say anything to mexico and what about the poor people stuck there and ask them about their southern border and you can practically hear crickets but you ask them hey wouldn't it be a good way to go to learn English and they sound off the great ayya yi yi yi which means throw the race card in spanish lol |

It's laziness, no if's, and's, or but's. Some people call it a stereotype, but if we're strickly talking about those who don't learn the language, it is definately a fair and accurate description.
And to freeman who asked why she not learn the mexican language...BECAUSE SHE'S NOT IN MEXICO! |

They haven't learned English because they just don't care to. According to the PEW Hispanic research center. 80% of illegals from Mexico do not want amnesty, they do not want to assimilate, they do not want to be Americans. They could care less about American culture or laws or people for that matter. By and large they (illegals) are driven by greed. The vast majority of illegals from Mexico were gainfully employed in Mexico before illegally entering America.
I love the post that says "your just not helping".; We as Americans owe NOTHING to illegals. Not a single thing. |

You are right, they should learn it. When I was in California, all the business signs were in some language that I couldn't understand. I felt so unwelcome in my own country. It is ridiculous. |

to lazy, don't want to be a true American, a illegal alien, a criminal, a drug dealer, a child molester, a murder, bet I forgot some of the other reasons! |

they need to learn it fast or get the heck out of our country. they are supposed to speak fluential english before they can become a citizen. |
|

because they sneak illegally and no intent to learn the language. |

i agree but most are too lazy and they won't learn it now because this country has catered to them by offering everything from driver's license tests to menu's in spanish. if we went to mexico i'm sure they wouldn't accommodate us they way we do them. |

cute_valley_boys

They probably don't realize they have options. Many schools offer English as a second language. |
