The real unemployment rate in the US was a hair over 18% in January, rose to 19.1% in February and is still rising. While there might be a brief respite from the mass layoffs at some point this year, do not expect the real unemployment rate to decline. More likely, it will continue to rise through 2010.
Remember the Clinton Administration changed the way unemployment, CPI, etc were reported back in 1993 to reduce increases in Social Security based on inflation by understating the true inflation rate, and to make them look more successful at combatting the unemployment which rose during the 1990-91 recession. However, there are statisticians who continue to report this data based on the original methodology so that you can compare the numbers over many decades. That 19.1% unemployment rate for February continues the mirroring of this period's data with data from the Depression. So don't be surprised if unemployment hits 25% during 2009-2010. |
