September 30, 2006 - A local group fighting for immigrant rights is calling for a boycott of two nationally known companies. Dunkin Donuts and Applebee's are accused of discriminating against immigrant workers whose names don't match their social security numbers.

On the 10th anniversary of what immigration reform advocates call stringent changes to immigration laws, supports of the legalization of the undocumented are once again speaking out -- only this time, they are hoping not only to mobilize their vote, but also use their buying power to force the kind of change they want.

"The social security administration says it plans to send out 8 million no match letters," said Martino Unzuerta, Chicago Workers Collaborative.

The initial purpose of the social security administration's 'no match' letter was to credit workers unclaimed social security earnings. The agency routinely sends out 'no match' letters to a company when employees' names and social security numbers don't match possibly because of a spelling error, omission of information or a unreported name change. But immigration activists say some employers are now aggressively using the letters to fire immigrant workers.
"The Bush administration wants to give the appearance that they are cracking down on undocumented immigration and workers are an easy escape goat," said James Thindwa, Chicago Jobs with Justice.

Groups accuse several companies of the practice using 'no match' letters to immigrant workers who don't have valid social security numbers. They want the public to boycott businesses, including Applebee's and Dunkin Donuts. Neither company could be reached for comment.

That is GREAT news..... they are taking the correct action in support of America....

Illegal aliens are criminals.... false IDs and SSNs.... Americans, the legal ones, would be thrown in jail for using false ID and false SSNs.

It should be no different for ILLEGAL ALIENS, jail, then deportation.... ILLEGAL ALIENS have absolutely NO RIGHTS while in the USA illegally.... they are just criminals... and should be deported along with their children... NO AMNESTY, NO BIRTHRIGHT citizenship for children of illegal aliens.....

I don't eat that crap to begin with, but even if I did, I wouldn't boycott them for following the law.

I love that they call it "immigration rights" when what they are really talking about is "illegal immigrant rights".

I absolutely support those following the LAW. I work in H.R. and I, too, will immediately pull an employee off the floor if there's a discrepancy with his/her SS. And they can't come back to work until they bring me documenation from SS that the discrepancy has been resolved.

That's what people who follow the law do - they make sure their workers are legal and eligible to work in the United States.

Wow, that's a long question but I don't think they have too much to worry about most people won't care and those that do will support their decision.

Thanks for the information. I don't see how any employer could live with them self knowing they are supporting criminal acts like illegal immigration.

Actually no. I wont boycot them, but I hope they at least pay any illegal immigrants that worked for them already!

I don't think a boycott of these two companies by illegals will make any difference in their profits. The Mexican illegals make their own doughnuts and I doubt many of them were ever fans of Applebee's anyway. They have my full support for following the law.

Jeesh, first they called people who don't approve of illegal immigration racists (and I know I'm not racist, I don't care what country you illegaly came here from) and now companies that have a bunch of employees with SS#'s that don't match are being called racist? Give me a break.

They need to bring in some immigrants that can cook, because the food is horrible at both (especially Applebee's). I will call them and tell them to hire more immigrants and put some Mexican food on the menu instead of a bunch of pre-bagged slop that they call food.

No illegals have an entitlement to submit flase documents pro illegals are not concern where the SS# come or who it belong to or how many lifes are destoryed by stealing SS# numbers. Well, I will be eating at Applebee's, there are no Dunkin' Donuts in my area. I will also contact friends and family to do the same

Thanks for letting us know that they are getting grief for trying to do their job (getting social security funds where they ought to go and then finding they have an entirely different problem).
