just seen yesterday a 20yr veteran firefighter in oregan lost his job because he couldnt speak spanish..this needs to stop in America we have been a english speaking nation from the beginning now our own American citizens are losing good paying jobs and having a foreign language shoved down our throats.. how in the world can people defending the illegals say such things as the illegal immigrants are just doing jobs americans wont when the very American citizens living here see everyday thats not the case they are coming here stealing good paying jobs working for cheaper wages thus putting Americans out of work ..this has to stop! |

of course it will in about 50 years..just check the 2000 census and see the rate Mexicans are reproducing compared to people who speak English...many Mexicans do try to assimilate...but many do not.. |

No if the US government makes English the official language. Then we can force people to learn and speak English if they want to survive in the United States.
I shouldn't be forced to learn another language, just so I can communicate with other people living here in the United States! |

Doubtful... English is taught and very prevalent in many countries that normally don't speak it.
The reason.. the US is a world power and many countries (whether they like us or not) want to do business with us. |

I don't think so, contrary to what certain lazy Hispanics want you to believe.
English is an amazingly flexible language. Since it has two very different grammatical systems merged into it, Germanic and Roman, it has been able to survive some major attempts at getting rid of it. I suspect that's one of the reasons why it is spoken worldwide--because it is so easy to take bits and pieces of other languages and incorporate them into the English language. This doesn't mean that people in four hundred years will speak the same English as we do, but they will be able to understand it as much as we understand the King James' Bible or Shakespeare. |

I think english is just fine....there are enough things written in english that it would almost be impossible for the world to turn if everyone didn't know english....at least some people have to know it always. |

No. Most industrialized countries speak English. In many Asian countries it is required to learn before they are allowed to graduate. |

If your talking about the U.S.A.,
If you go to a foreign country you expect to try and speak their language if you want to get along, around, whatever. Same thing here in the U.S.A. English is the main language. Speak what you want when your at home or among friends or social groups and so on but English is the language of the land.
Did the Germans, the polish, the Irish, the Italians, all expect to come over to the U.S and expect everyone there to speak THEIR language, NO! They where happy to be in this country, they wanted a better way of life and where more than happy to have a single language so everyone could make progress together as a country. |
