Would having both English and Spanish as the U.S. official languages be a good idea?

I'm with you on this one. I think Americans are just too ignorant to be accepting of a new language. Other countries promote educating their citizens on several languages, most other countries speak our language and several others fluently, why can't we? I'll tell you, that would take effort, something that us lazy Americans are not willing to put forth. No, we wish to remain ridiculously narrow-minded and have an elitist attitude. Our country is soooo much better than any other, we wouldn't possibly consider speaking another countries' language. Yeah, go ahead and wave your stars and stripes proudly while every other country learns and promotes our simplistic language. My appologies for going off on a tangent but I am really starting to dislike this beautiful country of ours. God Bless America, land of the free (think about it, are we really free???)

One language...has been proven that countries begin to denigrate with other languages. I am of course speaking as the official, law, communications. However, anyone can speak whatever language they wish too as long as they can understand and communicate in English in this English speaking country.

NO!! Our forefounders would turn over in their graves. All governmental documents, etc. are written in English, lets keep it that way. Thats whats wrong with people now, the spanish only speaking people need to learn the language. If you have two official languages that divides the people in the U.S. We are all different races/ethnicites. The one thing that brings us together is the English language. BESIDES I don't see Mexico saying they should have English as their official language.

No, for one just because we have a country on our border who speaks a different language doesn't mean we have to change. Should we have to have french as an official language too because of Quebec?
Plus, there needs to be one language or else we end up like a tower of Babel. It would be chaos and we would have government officials switching languages in order to keep someone ignorant and visa versa. If there is one language there is a protection of the people, those who do not speak English should learn it to protect themselves and if they want to live here that is the language. If i moved to Mexico I would not expect them to change their official language to English.

English should be the only official language, why? to promote common interest. If everybody has something similar in this country everybody will have the first step of getting along with each other. There will not be a language barrier. Better for communication and the business, better to get along with everybody. Once a person come to this country, they should learn to speak english, i know that english is the hardest language to learn but US is a great country to be in and everybody who come here should at least learn own country language. ENGLISH

I don't think it is a good idea to change to two official languages. I think it's better to have one solid foundation. But I like that schools are putting a greater emphasis on learning Spanish, and would like to see free community classes where their parents could learn, too. This is the "Melting Pot" so we will always have more than one language being spoken here... But we started in English, our government documents and Constitution are in English... I think for all official purposes, everything should still be done in English.

Bad idea. Look at the political difficulty our so very like us neighbor Canada has had with its French speaking Montreal Province. The President of France - De Gaul - actively promoted the secession of Montreal from Canada. I have no problem with some accommodation for our Spanish speaking population, but they should become bilingual as soon as we can help them do so. This means more help in schools. There is also a role for business in teaching English to Hispanics. This doesn't solve all problems but it sure does keep from exacerbating the existing ones.

I believe that America should keep its original official language. It's hard learning a second language and adapting to all the changes that would have to occur. Just leave America as it is.

I don't think other countries have more than 1 official language. Other countries may promote a second language, like the Scandinavians learning English, but it's not an official language. I think it's a good idea to have our populace educated in more than one language, but that's not what's being promoted. Hysteria of a spanish takeover is what's being promoted.

What a horrible idea! This is America we speak English here, many immigrants know this is the official language of this country, learn how to speak the language. They wanted to come here let them learn it.!

That is a great idea. Then we will have two languages that white middle class Americans, such as those whose posts preceded mine, can mangle.

Most anti-illegals will tell you no simply because that's how they are -fascist-. But in my opinion it's not a good idea since that would split the country into two. It would be harder to communicate and establish relationships among states.

-Full amnesty for selected immigrants
-Put criminals in jail and deport all others
-Enable stronger border and visitor security
