Would this be a good idea for immigrants?

Yesterday there was a debate at my university, it was suggested, immigrants, asylum seekers etc should have to serve a minimum of 2 years with the British army if they wish to live here, obviously not children, but many foreign people do not start families till thety arrive here. I personally think that this is a good idea. Obviously they would not be sent to war, especially if they have come from a war torn country, but it would give them a roof over there heads, food in there belly, good foundation of friends, help them to learn the language etc But most of all prove their commitment to this country, not that their just coming here to sponge benefits. Not that im saying all immigrants do this, my goodness many dont, many work hard, pay tax, and are just as much British citizens as anyone else. However some are here for the easy ride, the free houses, free health care, free money, they do not like or even respect this country.

So what do you think of this idea.
Please note that this is not a racially driven question.
Hard working, good living foreign people have just as much right to be here as anyone else!

However the ones that are here to bleed us dry, should they be made to go in the army, OR where this is not possible charity work, with Oxfam, the red cross etc?

Or should they just be allowed to sit and do nothing as a staggering 46% are?

Ok those of you who disagree with the military idea.....What about charity work....so they are constantly working and at least contributing??

The men and women of our armed forces are a credit to this nation, can you imagine suddenly filling it with pakistanis who,lets face it, have questionable allegiances. Many immigrants are here for the easy ride because their country (or god) could not provide them with the comftable lifestyle that we enjoy. Much of this is their own fault, through religious or social reasons.

Filling the ranks of our armed forces with pakistanis, west africans and somalis would turn it into a laughing stock.

The immigrants should not be allowed here at all. Go to places like bradford and oldham and you can see the piss take in all its glory. Ghettos with no allegiance to this nation.

The Idea is unsafe because there are some professions like, The Fire Brigade, Police,and Army etc can only be safely filled by persons of unquestionable loyalty in this decade. If a new immigrant can enter by this route I am sure there will almost certainly be undesirable elements swept into our midst. The safest Controls are to STOP all Immigration until every new immigrant who have recently arrived are checked out .Those who have been caught and absconded since, should be rounded up and removed from Britain through their own embassies .
All future immigration should be connected with reciprocal agreements from their former Country.

i disagree with this, for a start whe nmost people think of immigrants they think of the maunual workers in low paid jobs or totally unemployed and on benefits. Well, wha tabout the doctors, accountants, barristers, judges etc etc who are working in this country despite being foreign?

You think we should take the maway from their trade and send them to the army?

The modern British army needs recruits to be self motivated, technologically savvy and Intelligent. Gone are the days when the army just needed a constant supply of cannon fodder. Training a soldier in national service for non combatant troops costs ten of thousands, and to be honest the last thing we want to teach them is how to kill, god knows many of them seem already far to proficient in that subject....how about just not letting any of them here in the first place, there isnt enough work (even charity work) to go round as it is.

Can I ask how many from your own family have the hounour to 'serve' the country by joining the forces like you are suggesting???

And if skilled immigrants do that for you, then whose going to run your hospitals, your companies, and even some govt: organisations?

forcing people into the army would be like putting them in boot camps
would you also force an American banker to go in the army for 2 years or will it just be poor none white immigrants

I know quite a few immigrants who would be happy to serve in the forces here, they have stated about the conditions our guys have in comparison to what they had. So I think you will find a lot would be willing.
The charity idea is good too, unfortunately quite a lot do not have the language skills when they first arrive to manage this.
There are plenty of other areas in which no skilled workers could do something and contribute, currently government is suggesting for people on benefits to do community work, why should this not be the same for immigrants.
Allowing them to work within the community they want to be part, helping people with different needs, for older people helping to keep their gardens tidy ( I don't mean the expertise work just tidy) or assist those who can not afford window cleaners etc. Cleaning up local parks when they have become so run down the people of this country refuse to do anything but let it get worse. There are plenty of things that councils could put people into. It would not be too difficult for them to arrange that. After all the can arrange housing, money, furniture very quickly.

Asylum seekers aren't allowed to work by the law, so you're pointing the finger of blame at the wrong people.
The last couple of terrorists were british born, not immigrant, but they obviously didn't love the UK and went on to kill other fellow Brits, surely we should put the whole lot in the army too, then?

I think your idea bad and negative. A lot of white brits are claiming benefits unlawfully, or is it just because they're white it's ok?

The whole idea of charity is to do it voluntarily, other wise it loses its fundamental core.
