I'm a broke college student who is making a lot less than that working a summer job...I'd definitely do it! Working in the heat outside all the time might be a drawback but still,14$! I worked the worst job ever this year where I had to do hard manual labor+waitressing+bartending+dish washing all rolled into one each night, I was a caterer and we made like $6.50...needless to say that didn't last long. My answer to this poll is YES! |

Me, no. But most people would love to have a job like that. No skills, $14/hr???? That's getting into the coveted union level wage territory. And there are highly educated professionals (like nurses) in that territory. Only you can skip the years of education and student loan payments for this $14/hr job. It would be a dream come true for many, many people. |

As a college student, I might concider doing it part time, but when I get out I will have a better job then picking fruit. See it is a hard labor job that does not take brains to do it. College is not for everyone, and everyone should make a decent living without a college education. |

$14 per hour is a good wage for picking fruit, but I wouldn't do it for any price. I can't stand being out in the sun for too long. |

When I was young, without a degree, and without a professional career--YES.
However, today--I don't have to. I went to college. I worked my way up the career ladder over the past 25+ years. |

Sh*t I would do it for $11 an hour without any taxes! I would do it for $14 an hour too, but still! That is some good money...twice as much as minimum wage. |

Back in the early 1970's I picked 'em for 65 cents per bushel basket. The minimum wage was $1.85 an hour and if I worked fast I could make over $3 an hour.
Today, yes, for $14 an hour I'd drag myself out there and put in 10 hours on Saturday and another 10 on Sunday. I'd even be willing to put in a few hours after work during the week.
My boys (1 college and 2 high school) are busting their butts at fast-food jobs this summer for about $7 an hour. I'll bet they'd love to make $14 an hour too. |

Sure I would! $14/hr is a good wage. No need to employ illegal alien invaders here. Perhaps this unpatriotic farmer should consider how the rest of us are going to have to subsidize the wages that he pays through higher crime rates, welfare benefits, emergence room visits, etc. |

If I didn't have a better job and I needed to eat damn right Id do it. There's a lot of people here in the USA legally that would. Its all just propaganda and bull sh*t that he cant find workers.
Also the proximity of the farms to where the most unemployed in our population live has some factor in this too. |

Heck ya.....in a heartbeat. Problem is....I have NEVER EVER seen an add for one. Or had it offered as an option at any employment office. We don't have agriculture in this area but I did live in areas that did...Florida for one.....and never once saw a single job opening for those positions. It was like those jobs were held for illegals only. So no....don't beleive that farmer one bit. I've heard many are purposely allowing them to go bad in order to have more low wage earners allowed in the country for them to pick from. Yet 14 bucks isn't low wage. I've never made 14 bucks at a job and I went to college. Unless it was overtime. I've never done it before.....but I can learn. I know McCain got flooded with applications when he said there wasn't anyone who would pick lettuce for 25 bucks an hour. Every excuse they use doesn't pan out when it's really looked at and people know about it.
We had over 3000 applying for WalMart jobs here. They had them show up by the thousands for motel jobs in Florida that didn't pay squat. So I don't beleive for 1 second there aren't people available for those jobs if they know about it. |

It is a myth that Americans wouldn't take this kind of jobs, what happens is that employers stop hiring americans and hire illegals so they can pay them less. ie: I have a friend that always worked in construction, the last few years he hasn't been able to get a job in that field because he was told they were only hiring illegals.
Another example: I just saw an ad on the local paper written totally in Spanish, trying to recruit people to go to Alaska to work on crab boats for $7.25/hr......Legal citizens that currently do this kind of work are making almost $10K/weekly, so if they can get someone to do the same work for much less, obviously the illegals would take over that industry too. |
|

JUSTME
|
Sure thing. Show me the way to the fields. For someone who is unemployed, that is a very good hourly wage... Students should be lining up for this opportunity. |

I would do it for a lot less if I did not have to pay tax on the wages, did not have to buy medical insurance, pay for medical care. could skip out on utility and rent payments, drive uninsured cars, dump my garbage on the side of the road, live in a two bedroom home with three or four other families, disobey laws and get support from the government!
The majority of our military personnel are paid far less than that. They get a lot of benefits with their pay but they pay taxes and obey laws. They have fought and many died so we could enjoy our freedom and way of life that is now threatened through a lack of our government to do their job; secure our borders! |
