Yes I would. I was born and raised in Europe and my first language is French. I do not expect administrations to provide me with documents in French nor do I expect them to provide me with translators if I have to go to court or to city hall. |

It would be interesting to see President Bush required to learn the language. |

why not?
When someone immigrates here and refuses to learn the language..
what they are saying is....
"why should I learn English?...I can demand they put up signs that I can understand."
AT SOMEBODY ELSES EXPENSE....of course. |

Yes, I think it would solve a lot of problems. I realise that America is a nation of immigrants, but there's a lot of wasted paper because forms have to be printed out in 2-3 languages. I know in Michigan for example, all government papers are written in English, Spanish, and Arabic by default. I wouldn't mind English being the official language, and if someone wants to speak in a different language, more power to them. I just think it's dumb that Americans are being prosecuted because they make signs in their stores that say 'please speak only English' I mean it's their store, if someone has a problem with that, go to a different place. |

Yes! Yes, yes, yes! Silly? Remember, we didn't think we needed a law to define marriage as a relationship between a man and a women. Even former Sen. Inouye (sic) from Hawaii supported this. If we're going to make Americans out of these illegals slopping over our borders we can at least start with forcing them to learn English. |

I don't think a law would be appropriate, however visitors/residents of other countries should not expect us to speak their language as a primary means of communication in our country. Many places already cater too much to foreigners, by offering bilingual services- such as in our public school system. |

Yes. People think that an official language means that is the only language people are allowed to speak. People sometimes make me feel sad when I hear these things. Anyway, the reason I want to see an official language. is to defend the rights of people who work with the public. Like, police officers who do not speak the native language of every single person in the USA. So when someone comes here and wants to start trouble and doesn't understand the words "stop or I'll shoot" the cop doesn't get in trouble for shooting someone because they didn't understand him. The burden should be on the person who does not take it upon himself to learn the language and the customs. Not the person defending the public to learn the language of places he is not even at. |

Most nations with official languages also take into account indigenous languages and larger minority languages. I don't think we need an official language. Heck, the US managed to make English the 'unofficial' language of the world. |

What difference would it make? It already is. The additional languages to help new immigrant citizens participate comfortably in our society are part of what makes our nation great.
Note the words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty:
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" |

It's too bad a question like this should even have to be considered. English has always been the unofficial language. But, unfortunately we have to put into law what has always been to protect what America is. Just think of the billions of dollars that will be saved not having to print everything in so many different languages. |

It doesn't matter if you made "pig latin" the "official" language of the United States. It would be merely be a formality.
Our business affairs are conducted in ENGLISH. Our common language is English. We have millions of immigrants in the country, whose native language is from dozens of different countries. The common denominator is English. It would best behoove all immigrants to learn English so as to be able to communicate with the majority of the population.
American citizens will not learn THEIR languages to communicate with them. That would literally be impossible. |

I don't think it would be constitutional since one of the rights of the bill of rights is freedom of speech not only that it fails to recognize other dominate languages and indigenous languages that have been around longer in this country than English.
Cajuns, Indians and generations old Hispanics probably would disagree I know I do.
After all what would it accomplish? Nothing. |
