I like Spanish and learning a new language and being able to communicate with the Hispanics that are the majority where I live, L.A.

I think it already is. Everywhere you call you have the option to press 2 for Spanish, more recently to press 1 for Spanish and 2 for English.

The irony is that in uber-nationalistic Mexico, nobody offers the same English options for us Americans or the same resources to make life easy.

I think America is the most civil and liberal country when it comes to immigration. Many other nations allow only people with college degrees for example. In Australia and Canada I believe many Eastern-Europeans with a degree can immigrate. In our country everyone who wants only needs to cross the border, make a mockery of our laws and then complain loud enough and we'll give them driver licenses.

The means for Mexicans to become legal or semi-legal are VERY easy. Once here, many Latino-run businesses offer them second I.D.'s and find them employment with advertisments such as: Ilegal? No problema!

No. Most other countries don't have a second language either. Most have their main language. I don't mind if they do it with family and friends that speak their language but their is no reason to force everyone to be multilingual.

I want people to speak whatever languages they want. This is America, it is a person's choice. Speak 5 languages if you want, leave the federal government out of it.

It already is. Look at the TV listings- I can watch about 100 English channels, four (maybe five?) Spanish channels, plus Spanish HBO. There are individual programs in Korean, Chinese, Russian, and a few more. But it's already a done deal for having a handful of Spanish channels. Plus, they're pretty good, too, not cheesy low-budget shows. I got hooked on Cristina a few years back, though I don't always have a chance to watch her English-language show.

And to answer directly, "Yes, I'd like that."

I'd also like to watch shows from other countries. Soon's technology catches up, I'm looking forward to the local news from Paris, Bucharest, Brisbane, Heidelberg and Barcelona. Plus a gazillion other places. Internet newspapers are good, but not quite like real TV.

English has always been the language of America,
Immigrants for centuries have learned english and should continue to learn english.
I have no problem with personal ethnic converstions...
but this is America, immigrants leave their country to become and live in America, that's its spirit!

I don't think it was nobody's decision that there would be Spanish available for a bunch of services it's just a social phenomenon. The principal stimulus is a broader client base for businesses and that's leaving illegal immigrants out of consideration.

There was a point in time (in history) where the official language of the USA was being considered to be German. So as far as English culture being the only one pertinent that is hogwash !

Spanish is the most widely spread language of the European tongues, geogrpahically.

Canada has 2 official languages but outside of Quebec on ne l'entend jamais ! So in the USA we hear Spanish spoken in every state in the country but you would deny it a place ?

Lots of countries all over the world have situations where people speak more than one language. When you travel around the world, you probably expect people to understand English, so why not have other languages here too? I can't stand all this bigoted talk about languages. Neither English nor Spanish comes from America, they are both colonial languages from Europe, so get over it.

I think Spanish is a boring language. Most spiks speak the language so flat that it gets annoying listening to it. It's not the way the Spanairds speak it (they speak it beautiful), it's the way the illegal spiks speak it...If you want to learn another language, learn Italian and come to new york!
