"Give us your tired, your poor...."?

“Give us your tired, your poor, your hungry, your huddled masses yearning to be free” What ever happend to this saying that is carved on the Statue of Liberty? Why isn't the United States honoring it? Has the United States Changed it's mind now? Or did it mean "Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free (as long as they are white or look white but not your Mexicans?)." Has it occured to anyone that first they get rid of this, then they abridge the rights of the U.S. citizens after 9/11 and soon the Constitution goes, then what are we left with? Additional Details Remember: the people who first settled in the U.S. didn't come legally, the Irish who came over didn't come legally, but yet they were still allowed to come in. Ummmm.....is this really not about race? Don't kid yourselfs.

There is a lot of misconceptions about illegal immigrants on this board....I agree with you.....anti immigrant sentiment is growing in this country....After 9/11 this govt. went on all sortof of avenues to take away freedoms such as wire tapping etc. Now they want a national I.D card, which is invasive and violates your privacy....Why do we seek safety in exchange for our freedoms? |

or how about taking in people legally. It has nothing to do with race, it has everything to do with laws. |

Since when is the US no longer allowing immigrants? Can you provide a link?
FYI, "Give us your tired, your poor..." never meant "send them here illegally and undocumented by the millions, mixed in with your criminals and possible even a terrorist or two".
Stop believing whatever liberal lies you're listening to and get your facts straight before you come on here distorting truth.
You're right about the Constitution being under attack - and this illegal immigration scheme by the GOP and Dem parties is part of it. If you want to save the Consdtitution get on board with reality and protect the borders and national sovereignty. You can't have it both ways. |

And people still came thru the island and have records of them. They were legal here. The border jumpers are not legal. |

Yeah? That's sure a nice slogan, but it applies to LEGAL immigrants only. If you can't be bothered to apply legally, why should we welcome you into our country? What's your next move, armed robbery/drug dealing? Those aren't exaggerations, those examples are ripped straight from the headlines.
The United States got 'jacked on 9/11, we need to do differently than in decades past, now. Time to wake up, smell the coffee, and support returning the immigration process to some kind of lawful standard instead of just throwing up our hands and walking away from it. Support the US Border Patrol! |

Thats meant for the people who want to be here to make a difference, who are willing to learn English, pay taxes, and keep their money here and become Americans. Not for people who just want to make a quick buck, and live off the government. |

We can't take care of all of those tired, poor, hungry people. We already have more than enough to care for. |

We still welcome immigrants - they just have to follow the law and processes set up in order to come over legally. There are plenty of people waiting to enter the US legally - why should others be able to skip this process and effectively cut in line?
It's not fair to the people trying to do the right thing by abiding by the laws. |

It does not say sneak through our borders. Every immigrant is still welcome, but you have to follow and obey they laws for intering the country. |

the china doll is absolutely right, and we do still take poor the hungry the huddled masses, we take refugees when necessary. you need to stop bringing race into this, it has nothing to do with race |

The key is "yearning to be free" - they aren't yearning to be free, they're yearning to make a buck, not pay taxes, and get free insurance, medical benefits, and so on. And it's hurting our own educational system by spreading the funds across SO many more kids. You wonder why teachers aren't paid as much as they should be, or why there are too many kids in a classroom, or why the schoolbooks/computers/etc. aren't the quality they should be? Here's your answer...millions of illegal immigrants aren't putting into the system, but are leeching off of us. But I guess you don't care about our own children, so that's your perogative. |

That was never governmental action. It was put on a pedestal by a private group that held a contest for a poem which was won by a Greenwich village poetess.
In their private opinion it reflected historic feelings. It is still a memory of those times.
I have no idea how you can turn that into issuing a civil right for all the world to come here and be paid for under social services that didn't even exist at the time. |

(and that's not successfully getting on welfare)
We are not bound by an inscription on a statue but rather by the laws of our land.

No, it still exists. You seem to forget that our country has a process required to do all things, called laws, that require proper steps to be taken to come into the country. Even those who come for a short time are required to acquire visas. Illegal entry into the country isn't a debate; It is breaking laws making it a crime. all who enter by illegal means are criminals. criminal being defined as one who breaks the law. so, YES! criminals. If you would like to change the process, change the law. your time would be better served legislating than whining about the way things are. The system is there, start a movement to change it. Back to the point, you seem offended that the turmoil today seems geared toward the mexican people, but I ask you how many of the people here illegally are mexican. mabey ninety percent. of course it's going to be geared toward the mass. it's also the border where the illegal activity takes place. What do you suggest?
to your addition.... no the original settlers weren't here by the legal means required today. However, those who were here, are the ones who legislated the law making it illegal to enter the country without process......they are the ones who made the law....you seem to be fishing for a leg to stand on and unfortunately....have one....you don't. sorry. |

No but they were quarantined and given work permits. They settled at Ellis Island and migrated through the U.S., LEGALLY.
I'm really surprised that with all of the suffering real Americans are dealing with right now, people would rather compound the problem with illegal immigrants rather than fix the problem and help their own countrymen first. It just goes to show that your loyalties are with someone or something else other than here. Simply pathetic. |

"Where does it say, "only if they are legal" on this saying? It doesn't."
Because that should be self evident.
What you are asking is for the the U.S. to give up soverienty over its borders. That's ridiculous. The US still accepts large numbers of LEGAL immigrants each year (and only a smill minority of them are caucasian).
You mention the statue of liberty. Which is on Ellis Island where thousands of immigrants were legally processed before being allowed into the country. Expecting immigrants to enter the US legally rather than just sneaking in it at will is not at all new. |

I am confused by you equating not tolerating law breakers with the erosion of our constitution. while I agree our constitutional rights are being infringed upon on a daily basis, I fail to see how the ILLEGAL problem has anything to do with that. |

These days, with crimes and terrorism, it is better to admit immigrants by fully screening them, their health, their background. If other countries can do that why cant Mexico do it. Those words apply to all, Immigration process takes time and yet it will also help the economy of US as this workers come here and pay their taxes. When this illegal immigrants commit crimes here, law enforcers doesn't even know they exist. The statue of liberty..engraved message..well during those times...anybody can come here as long as you have passport. we are in different times now. |

What ever happened to being able to own slaves..... ( not saying that is right) but times change...
Maybe if you carve in there " Give us your tired, your poor, your hungry, your huddled masses yearning to be free, As long as your not a lazy welfare taker, a MS-13 gang member, not going to drop 40 babies to get even more money, not going to infest our neighborhoods with graffitti drugs and lowriders, your only going to hang business signs that are in english so my neighborhood does not look like downtown Tokyo, that if you work behind a counter ANYWHERE that you can speak english and not get pissed when i dont speak Punjab at Burger King, That you promise to take a bath at least every couple of days, that while religion is not allowed in our school you understand this and take off your muslim head coverings, you learn to drive, not like in India but according to our rules......
Just a few things we can carve on their and then maybe just maybe..... open the floodgates......... but then only 1% of the people would be allowed cause they followed the rules.
Man I kind of went off on a rant there..... |
