I started driving a moped last February and I've had 3 125's since I turned 17 last August, the insurance for both was Â£350 from Lexham Insurance.
Today I insured another 125 which I bought off my mate, Yamaha XT125X, Â£224 a year Third Party Only and I paid in full with my card. I used GoCompare and my insurer is AXA. Very good price for a 125 considering I'm 17.
Might be over Â£300 for you because it's your first time on a road legal bike?

Why not approach this problem the other way round?

The cost of bike insurance depends amongst other things, on your age, where you live, your driving record and the type of bike although most 125â€™s with some notable exceptions are fairly cheap to insure. I accept that what is cheap to me may be a fortune to a 17 year old! Some of the more obscure Chinese bikes are hard to insure as companies have no group rate for them but you will find out what to avoid in the next step.

First, get the make model of a couple of bikes you really fancy plus several that are not quite so cool but would do the job. â€˜What Bikeâ€™ magazine has a great section in the back with pictures of most bikes, scooters and mopeds and they handily label those that are legal for 16â€™s and 17â€™s with a L16 and L17. I assume you know if you have the correct licence to ride a125.

Then check out an on-line bike sales site like Auto Trader and search for each of your chosen bikes to get an idea what you need to spend to buy a good one.

Once youâ€™ve got a short list of bikes that fall within your budget, go on-line and get a quote for each one. You may need to repeat this exercise until you find a combination of a bike you like at a price you can afford, which is within your insurance budget.

Yes its takes some time but it should be fun and you will learn at lot before you dive in with your hard earned cash.

As far as prices go, without having your full details, a ball park figure for Third Party Fire and Theft would be up to Â£300 but you are likely to have a Â£300+ excess on that which means you have to pay the first Â£300 of any Fire or Theft claim. The cost of insurance will be considerably higher if you donâ€™t have a proper garage to keep the bike in at night.

Now if the bikes only worth say Â£400 then Â£300 for insurance with the first Â£300 of the bikes value deducted from a claim means you need to think about having Third Party Only.

Its worth considering spending as little as possible to get a good, safe and reliable bike and then buy a mega lock and chain so you can insurer Third Party Only for perhaps Â£200. Obviously you will get nothing if someone steals your bike (a big problem these days) and its not worth considering if you are expecting to spend at lot more on the bike.

And now some old-git stuff! Make sure there is enough money left over for a good helmet, gloves, armoured jacket and trousers and wear them, even on a hot day. As a long time biker as well as an insurance nerd, I know it looks cool to ride in jacket and jeans but it really hurts if you come off even in the right gear.
