Recently received a letter from the DVLA telling me I had to renew my driving licence photo apparently everyone who passed their test from 1998 onwards will have to do this every 10 years and will cost you £17.50 and will most certainly rise every year. Can the British motorist be ripped off any more with crazy prices for car tax and fuel taxes is this just another stealth tax for the British motorist

You actually have it easy.
In the U.S we have to get new vehicle plates every year (the price is based on the year of your vehicle), plus new driving license every 6 yrs (in my state) which cost us $21.00.
We have wheel tax, excise tax, fuel tax, state tax and any other tax they can add. |

Of course it's a rip off but what can we do? we will all end up moaning but paying anyway. |

I thought it was free! I knew it had to be updated every 10 years but thought they didn't charge unless you chose to have it changed earlier. Just another way to rip people off, not good at all. |

complete rip off....i have just moved house & thought i had lost my paper counterpart so i paid £17.50 for a replacement but then i found it amongst some paperwork & asked if could get this refunded but surprise surprise its a NON REFUNDABLE payment(which they failed to tell me about!!!) |

I passed in mid eighties and was informed by DVLA that it was the law that we all must have a photo ID. not just from 1998. Think they lied still have the letter. |

i have just started out in the driving world, and so far i have paid £300 all on forms sent to the dvla, best off which the forms dont have names they have numbers, like who actually cares for the number? |

Yup - I asked about this a few months ago after noticing the expiry date. I emailed the DVLA and had a right go, and actually asked them if they expected me to pay a fee for their request to renew the licence. You don't have to pay to renew passport, as long as you have the old one. It's just another tax on the 'rich' motorist which the MPs don't need to pay as they claim it back.
And yes - they can and will rip you off more. Just wait and see! |
