So, as I was test driving out a buddies car that I was going to later buy, I get pulled over by this not so nice cop and get a ticket for driving a unregistered car.
I was going to buy it anyway, so I told him that, and he says if it's registered by the time I go to court for the ticket, the fine should be dropped.
But my questions to anybody that may know are..
1.) Since I live on the border of Wisconsin and Illinois, I would like to get my car registered in Wisconsin even though I technically don't live there. In Wisconsin, you don't need any insurance at all. I would get it registered under a friends name with my name in it as well.
Would this stand out in court? Is it a bad idea? My license is in Illinois. I'm very short on money as of lately so this would be VERY nice to do.
2.) If the above isn't possible, anybody know how much it would cost to transfer the plates from my old car to this car in Illinois?

The vehicle must be registered in the state that you are a legal resident of.
If caught doing what you want to do, the IL Tax Dept could charge you back taxes owed from the time the car was first registered by you to whatever date you finally get caught. Numerous people have tried that in WV & VA in Bluefield, which is a border town between WV & VA. The WV & VA Tax Dept's recovered thousands of dollars in back taxes due from people doing exactly what you want to do. So my advice, do not do that.
Besides, you need to show proof of residency in WI before you will be issued a registration anyway. |

If you live in Ill the car must be registered there. It doesn't matter what the laws are in Wis. if you drive in Ill ins will be mandatory. $150 to transfer |
