Please help....am I liable for $2700 expense that rental car company is charging me? Here is the story.....I rented a car in Las Vegas. I waived the car insurance provided by the car rental agency. I drove the car from Las Vegas to Arizona to visit Grand Canyon. On the way to Grand Canyon, in the state of Arizona, I heard a blast....followed by smoke, by the time, I pulled the car over to safety from highway traffic; the car engine froze and came to a complete halt on side of the shoulder. As I waived the insurance, I thought I could fix the problem myself, so I took the car to a mechanic. He said, the oil plug holding the engine oil, came off, which caused the engine oil to leak and eventually froze the engine. He gave this in writing. Here is my main issue: I signed the waiver and mentioned that I will not take my car out of the state of Nevada. I took the car to Arizona and car broke down in Arizona. Now the rental company sent me a bill for $2700. I do have a valid insurance on my own car. What are my options? Should I hire a lawyer to defend or may be counter sue? I have 4 people including me and my pregnant wife in the car. Could it be the fault of rental car agency for providing me a car with loose oil plug?

car rental companies have rules like this for that exact reason. You can accuse the rental company all you want ... they are just going to say that it was tight and was loosened from over use and excessive driving.
Car Rental companies dont care where you go ... they only care if the car comes back good enough to rent again. In this case, the car did not come back at all.
Also none of their insurances cover breakdown. So even if you had gotten the super duper insurance it never covers things like this especially if you are in the wrong ... and you were in the wrong.
You might be able to settle if you offer to buy the car at a rate lower than they are asking. |

I used to work for a car rental company, so I know a little. And you're very probably liable for the damage.
You do not have the authorization or the right to have repairs made on the car. That's point one.
Point two, you were offered insurance on the vehicle and opted not to take it.
Point three, you violated the terms of your rental contract overtly, and they've nailed you because of the location of your breakdown.
A phone call to an attorney might be worthwhile, but don't hold out a lot of hope for being off the hook. |

Hey man,you left the state.They could have a defense for that especially if they have it in writing.Looks to me you're going to be out of $2700.I would call a few different lawyers to get a concensus on what would be the best thing to do.Most lawyers offer free consultation |
