Sorry, they are correct. If the damage is caused by mechanical error, it is excluded. Read your policy under the exclusions section. This is the problem with America today, people just dont read! I bet you dont even know where your policy booklet is, right?

Anyways, getting off my high and mighty horse, contact the vehicles manufacturer directly and inform them of the situation.

I would read your policy - I suspect that the fire damage will be covered but the damage to the engine will not.

It is of course up to the insurance company to proove that a mechanical fault caused the engine to blow up.

Having worked as an assessor I can say that while the damage to you engine will not be covered, the damage to the vehicle by fire should as this was caused by consequential damage which was secondary .As a comparison its like having an electrical short in the vehicle to a wiring loom ,the damage to the loom will not be covered but the secondary damage to other components would be such as the battery,starter, or any fire damage caused by the original fault .I would suggest if they wont pay up you request the case go to arbitration or write to the insurance ombudsman with your complaint.

Sounds like the insurers are trying it on. Read your policy documents carefully, I'll bet there's nothing in there about mechanical faults

not covered this is why . your car had a mechanical failure. that caused the fire. had you stopped before the engine failed and the car caught fire then they woud have covered it. in other words the failure caused the fire . if a man has a heart attack while driving and has a wreck his auto ins. would not cover any damages caused by the accident. but his health ins will cover the cost of his health problem that caused the accident. doesn't make sence does it

Mechanical faults and wear and tear are excluded on all insurance policies. The insurers should pay for the damage caused by the fire, but not for the actual mechanica fault. Obviously if your car has been burnt out, they should pay for the car, however they may reduce the payout by a % in respect of the mechanical fault.

If they refuse to pay, speak to the insurance ombudsman and contest it!

Only the fire damage is covered, not the mechanical problem..

razonje is right I'm afraid. If someone had stolen your car and set it alight then they would have paid up but they won't pay for a mechanical/electrical fault. Sorry!

if it is in the the "small print" on your policy then they are correct so check your policy.i do know of a person who,s car caught on fire in a car park which was caused by a mechanical fault and the insurance company paid out.hope they pay you out as it is not your fault the car caught fire.good luck

Fight them all the way. They cannot wriggle out of this. For the American guy below, please note that this is UK and Ireland answers and our laws are different thank God.
