Find answers to your legal question.

Am i legal to drive my fathers van?

I was wondeirng, if i am legal to drive my fathers van, i have fully comp, insurance and i am 21 years old, i was just curious, as i was told that the legal age to drive another vehicle was 25

As long as you have a valid driver's license, and as long as your father has insurance on the van, you are legal. Your insurance and your age do not come in to play here.

ANY licensed driver may drive your father's van -- with his permission -- regardless of their age. The only exception to this is if they are listed on his insurance as an EXCLUDED driver.

Many rental companies will not rent to under-25s, and those that do usually charge additional fees, but this does not affect your driving your father's van.

If the van is insured for any driver YES ,or if you are insured to drive any other vehicle YES.

Id like to remind the yanks on here ... that this is the UK site .. so he doesn't have to say where he is.

i would check your own insurance not all cover you to drive other peoples cars also because its a van its classed as commercial you might not be covered so the easy answer is check with your insurance.

There are three requirements:

1. You must hold a valid licence to drive the vehicle in question - if it's a transit type van then it's covered by a standard licence, but if it's bigger you need to check your entitlements and the weight of the vehicle.

2. You must be insured to drive the vehicle. Your own insurance may give you cover, but note that it will only be third party - the fully comp part is only on the car on the policy. You may also be insured under your dad's insurance, but it's unlikely, unless he has specifically set this up, as insuring 21 year olds costs more.

3. You must have the owner's permission. If it's your dad's van, then fine, but if it's a works vehicle then you need the permission of the business.

There are certain size engines that an insurance company will not insure you on if you are under 25. Check with your insurance company. But as for driving other cars if you have insurance and a licence to cover them you can drive them.

It depends of course on which country you live in! In Australia you may drive your fathers van if he has you covered on his insurance because you are under 25 yo, if you were a learner in Australia your father would not need to have extra insurance but as soon as you got your 'Ps' he would need extra insurance...

You need to be on his insurance, you need to be 25 to driver a company car/van etc. Or the insurance firm won't pay out.

All the best.

your best bet is to contact dvla and they will give u all the info u need go to www.dvla.co.uk

Many rental companies won't rent to anyone under 25. Other than that, I've never heard of a minimum age as long as you are a licensed driver.

To andy manc uk RE: 'this is the uk site'. I found the question on the US site. There is no reference to the UK.

state? country? details help fool where i am if you have that class of license you can drive anything age does not matter

Yes your legal so long as your father has'nt put himself down as the only driver of the van on his insurance if he has there might be a problem but i think you should be ok.

Ring your insurance company and ask them - they know the answer

If you have fully comp insurance in your own name, and have your father's permission to drive the van each time you take it out. Then yes it's legal.

Regardless of your age, you have got to get the vehicle owners permission before you take it out on the road - 61 or 21 you still have to ask first.

thats nonsence if you have your license and insurance on the vehicle you can drive it. I know my dads insurance covers any vehicle he drives, his or not but he has a very clean driving record and a perfect credit rating so they kiss his AS*, too bad they wont do me that way. He pays less for full coverage on a 2005 h2 hummer, a 2006 Pontiac g6 and a like 2000 camper for a year than i did for no fault in my first 6 months insuracne when i first got my license at 18 for a 1992 grand marquis

Depends on the restrictions that you parents have put on the insurance to reduce the cost.

When you don't allow anyone under 25 drive your vehicles you get a discount because the driving statistics show that drivers under 25 are at higher risk to cause an accident

NO - as long as you have a full driving license you can drive a van

Lawyer
no
you can drive it

depending on the size you can if you get the right insurance cover. you might have to check it out with your own insurance first. if you are covered you still need to be 25 to drive it under your insurance

Joe S
As long as you have your drivers lisence i would think you could unless it was like one of those box vans and then you might need a diffrent one.

the age thing sounds like an insurance issue, the law allows you to drive a vehicle up to 7.5 tons on a car licence held for over 2 yrs.

Christy B
Yes, you are, as long as it doesn't require a CDL
