You can only be added as a named driver if the car is in your mums name as only the registered keeper of the vehicle can get an insurance policy on the vehicle. And as you would be a named driver your mum would have to get the initial policy then add you.
If the car is going to be registered in your own name then i would suggest getting third party, fire and theft.
Its cheaper than fully comp and as your only learning it would be the cheapest way to build up your no claims bonus providing you dont have an accident.
A good website to get a quote from is www.4youngdrivers.co.uk
Your insurance will be a little high, but not as high if you were under 21. (as your insurance goes down after the age of 21).

As for the year of cars this should help.

SUFFIX ie the last letter on the number plate
JAN-DEC
A 1963 B 1964 C 1965 D 1966

JAN-JULY
E 1967

AUG-JULY
F 1967 G 1968 H 1969 J 1970 K 1971 L 1972 M 1973 N 1974 P 1975
R 1976 S 1977 T 1978 V 1979 W 1980 X 1981 Y 1982

PREFIX ie the first letter on the number plate

AUG- JULY
A 1983 B 1984 C 1985 D 1986 E 1987 F 1988 G 1989 H 1990
J 1991 K 1992 L 1993 M 1994 N 1995 P 1996 R 1997

AUG -FEB
S 1998 V 1999 X 2000

MARCH -AUG
T 1999 W 2000 Y 2001

NEW FORMAT ie with the numbers near the middle of the number plate
SEPT-FEBRUARY
51 2001
52 2002
53 2003
54 2004

MARCH -AUG

If this is any use to you let me know.

Ok then. Where do I start. lol. I am going to assume you have a provisional licence.

Lets start with getting you a small cheap car. I personally would recommend something similar to a an old style fiesta or puegot 106. They are cheap to buy and cheap to run and will do just fine for learning in.

With your new car you will need all the documents. First off you will need road tax and it must be covered by an MOT.
You need to insure yourself on your car and there are some companies that do provisional licence insurance, its suprisingly cheap. Even though you are not skilled on the road, you have an experienced driver with you to stop you ******* up majorly. Expect for a girl (no offence) your age, maybe around £600/700. Look at the big companies first, AA, RAC etc.
Conditions of this insurance is you need L plates on at all times you are driving, and you need a person at least 21 years old, who has held a licence for 3 years with you at all times.
Its under your name though.

As for number plates, heres how the new system works.

first you get two letters. then you get two numbers.
eg - AB01 ABC
OR - AB51 ABC

What these mean is that 01 means your car was registered between March 1st and August 31st 2001.
51 means your car was registered between September 1st 2001 and February 28th(29th) 2002.

Basically the year from September 1st to August 31st is split into two halfs and the 0- number is the first half and the 5- number is the second half.
The second digit (which is the same for both halfs) is the actual year. So the current plate number is -7 because it is 2007.

Hope this helps.

the only question i can answer for certian is the car year....when you look @ the VIN plate the 10 th digit is the year. some are letters & some are numbers .here is the scale from year 1995 - 2005
S=95
T=96
V=97
W=98
x-99
Y=2000
1=2001
2=2002
3=2003
4=2004
5=2005

yes you will need insurance for you and your mum.
you will also need a valid mot.
the reg no indicates age ie older cars such as r reg are 1986-1987, s reg 1987-1988 t reg 1988-1999 and so on 2000, will be 02, sept 52, and so on hope this helps you

welcome news
The car will have to be insured for whoever want's to drive it - if your mother has a car insurance in her own name then she may have third party cover under her driving other cars extension.

With regard to the year of manufacture - it is not possible to tell exactly what year it is as the number plates overlap.

223 e.g NV07ABC (the 1st two letters indicate where the vehicle was registered)

The two digit number indicates the year BUT if the first digit is a 5 then the vehicle was registered Sep that year to Feb the following year. So

56 means Sep 2006 to Feb 2007
06 means Mar 2006 to Aug 2006 etc

133 i.e. 1 letter, 3 numbers, 3 letters.
Came out in Aug 1983 with A. BCDEFGHJKLMNPRSTVW. Apply from August to July
331 i.e. 3 letters, 3 numbers 1 letter
CAme out in 1963 with A - originally Jan - December but with 'E' only ran from Jan to July.

If you see a car advertised as a 'T' reg then you can be sure that the car is registered Aug - Dec of the earlier year. Similarly if the car is advertised as a 1997 then you can be sure that the registration letter is of the earlier period.

With regards to expenses - other than tax/ insurance you will have to budget for petrol, maintenance and depreciation.

Quite a few answers suggest you get your mother to insure the car with you as a named driver. Insurance companies take a dim view of this, if you are the main driver, and if you had an accident that was your fault, they may well decide not to indemnify you. The insurance jargon is 'fronting' a policy. Seek advice from a reputable insurance broker.

Ans 1> i suggest get insured, if not for u mom.. get urself insured. Cost depends on the type of plans u get in.
Ans 2> U have to insure ur car too, to b safe in car damage de to accidents.
Ans3> Purchase year of the car is mainly seen by the purchase papers given by the distributor... not always the Car no.

Hope this will help u.. :)

I'd save your money for the time being and pay for professional lessons until you've successfully passed your tests. It's never good for a relative or close friend to teach you, as both of you'll bring too much "baggage" into the car. Mum will probably have picked up some bad habits, too, even without realising it

chloe_saiana
if your in the uk, the easiest way to find out the year is to look on the log book (V5) that will have the year of registration on.
The insurance will depend on the car and your post code.
altho alot have people have said it's expensive it's worth you insuring the car in your name with your mother as a named driver so that you can start building up your no claims discount to apply on future polices, (unless you can go as a named driver on your mum's policy and still get your no claims discount)
If the tax is up to date it'd probably got a valid MOT (need one of these yearly so that your car is legal to drive on the road) you will also need your MOT certificate along with your insurance documents when it does come time to tax the car.

and don't forget your L plates when your driving! (get magnetic ones so you can take them off if your mum is driving)

You need insurance for you and your mother if she is going to drive it. As to cost - blimmin exspensive! I suggest you get it insured in your mothers name and you become a named driver. This usually works out cheaper.
You need to check that the car has an M.O T if it is old enough(anything over 3 years requires an MOT).
You can tell the year of the car by looking at the first letter(old style plates) or the 3rd and 4th digits(new style plate)
Go to DVLA website for more info.

Get the drivers manual from your DMV or MVA.

You will need insurance for the Car, include your mother on the policy. You don't mention if your mother has a license, but I assume she does. If you are not a licensed driver contact the insurance company about what insurance you need till you get your license.

I realize how confusing insurance is when dealing with cars, talk to your insurance company, they are well trained to handle any situation.

You will also need Tags for the car, may need a state inspection, may need local stickers.

As for the date of the car look inside the drivers door, there should be a plate with date of manufacture, however bare in mind that cars are released in September for the next year.

The VIN number also contains the model date and all the build info. Look in the owners manual for detail on how to read this.

if youre mother allready drives she can sit with you.she wont need insurance but you will.the car must be taxed and mot,d.youre insurance wiill depend on what car you buy.one with a small engine is best.eg.vauxhall corsa.new number plates started in 2001so if the number plate has 2 letters then 2 numbers 3letters you now its made after 2001.if made before then youll have to ask owner or someone you now to tell you..

yeh, get a small car like a ford KA, get the insurance online in your mothers name. If its in yours then it will cost a fortune.
Check that it has been MOT'd and has a wee while to go before the next one.
the years are easy, you will find a guide on the dvla's website. I wouldnt go for anything too old, start at m reg at oldest thats a 1994/5 car n -95/6, p-96/7 etc

actually the VIN or Vehicle Identification Number, tells you alot about a car from year, model, paint code, engine size etc.
One thing you have to remember is that once you get the car, you have to get the title in your name, pay taxes, insurance etc.

Breakdown of costs:

Title : Varies from state, usually around $15
Tax : Varies from state, usually a certain % of the cost
Insurance : New drivers around $150 a month less if Female, less if married
Inspection : If you live in a state that required inspections, then they run around $45 or so, if anything doesnt pass inspection they will dead line the car and make you pay before you can drive it again. So make sure your car doesnt spit oil from the exhaust pipes for some strange reason.
