it's not free, especially in california!
on your registration paper, it'l say whether or not you have to goto a smog check ONLY station. If so then you can't go just anywhere, you have to go to a place that ONLY smogs cars and nothing more. So if you fail the test then you have to go get it repaired elsewhere.
the test varies, if your car is newer, like 1998 or newer, the test should be about 20 minutes. If your car is older than that the test could take up to 40 minutes because there's more things that have to be checked/inspected.
If your check engine light is on, do not have your car tested, you will fail immediatly.
IF your light was on and stayed on for a while, and went off on its own, you will probably fail as well because cars from 1996 and up use a standardized diagnostic system, OBD-II.
sometimes the trouble codes don't get erased automatically and stay in the computer's memory.
knowing this, the smog test will also plug the test machine into your car's OBD-II port that's under your dashboard and will read the data live during the test. If it sees a trouble code, although the light isnt' on, you failed again.
the smog people are supposed to smog the vehicle, whether they see obvious issues or not, then fail the car afterwards.
that's technically the law. the nicer people will tell you to come back when the light's off. |
