My car was hit in a parking lot, I was wondering what kind of investigations would be done if i filed a claim. I need to get my front bumper replaced so it would be around $500 or so. Not a huge claim.

Yes, all claims are investigated. The degree of investigation varies. For a $500 claim, they will probably come out to see the car, take pictures, and make a snap judgment if the damage matches your story. For example, a minor dent on a bumper is consistent with anonymous parking lot damage. Creases in the roof are not.
Again, for $500,. they're not going to go back and try to collect surveillance videos, track down witnesses, etc. It's not worth the time. Just be honest with them. If you're lying about something, it sends up red flags.
I once had someone vandalize my car, and the adjuster they sent out was a young girl. Even with her limited experience, she knew what was current damage, and that the tail light was broken before, and asked me about it. So just be honest. Things happen. That's why you have insurance. |

Of course they are.
$500 may not be a big claim. But lets assume they decide not to investigate all the $500 and less claims.
Potentially, that's hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, that would go un-investigated. Risk is too high for false claims....so, they have to check them all out. |

Depending on how believable your story is, they will decide whether to investigate a claim. they go with what their guts tell them. its at their own discretion. and the answer to your question is yes. considering how unscrupulous some people are they normally don't want to take chances.
