Are black and silver licence plates legal in the UK.?

There are a number of cars here in Warrington with Black Number Plates, with Silver lettering. This looks like the very old style plates (60s and earlier).
Is it legal for any car to have these plates, or is it Illegal unless your car is old enough? Would that mean the Mk5 Golf GTi I see daily is breaking the law, or can I have them on my car?

Vehicles registered before 1973 I believe can have the old type plate. |

The MKV Golf GTi you see daily is indeed breaking the law. Your car needs to be pre-1973 to be allowed to display them.
If Police become involved Fixed Penalty Notices or Vehicle Defect Notices may be issued. DVLA can fine you up to £1000 and if it is a private number take it off you. Your vehicle will also fail the MoT test. |

I think you will find that black and silver/white plates are only legal on cars registered before 1973. |

If the car is old enough then they are legal. If its on a modern car it is illegal. |

Only for vehicles registered before 1973...so there wont be many of them running about.....yes the Golf you mention would be running on illegal plates.....so report it if it is getting on your nerves....would have thought the Police would have done that already. |

Up until 1973, ALL motor vehicles in the U.K. had black and silver number plates.
If the vehicle was registered before January 1st 1973, you are still entitled to fit black and silver number plates.
If the vehicle was registered after January 1st 1973, it is an offence to fit black and silver number plates. |

Maybe this is a person from Jersey, Guernsey and the Channel islands ?
many car traders are buying them from there and running on there number plates and then transferring the plates later to UK registered ones ?
These are normally styled in a private reg format two letters three numbers
As the speed limit is restricted, there are a lot of low milage high quality cars at give away prices due to owners have more money than sense ?
Just a thought ?

The law is if it was fitted as standard equipment when new you can have it .
