I have a 73 VW Bug that doesn't run, and the registration has been expired for about a month. In California, are there going to be huge fines when I do get it registered? I hope to get it running soon, I thought there was maybe a certain amount of time it had to be non operation, to register it non op, so I didn't want to do that. Help please!

Ca shows no mercy! If your not going to drive it for awhile go down and place it on non-op. With non-op status you'll pay a $15 fee plus your late fee ($30 + aprox $5 on a car that old) but then your protected from acurring more late fees. Even if you don't get it running for like 2 or 3 years, you won't have to pay the reg fees for the time it's not running. You only have 90 days to non-op after your expiration date.
Now if your going to have it running within the next couple of months and your already past 30 days late, your fees won't go up again untill the 1 year mark. Still pay it within 2 or 3 months or the franchise tax board (Ca collction agency) will hunt you down.

what you need to do is put a non-op on it till you get it running then you'll only have to pay for the one month that it is late. |

The Non-Op is only $10, so do that.....When it runs, go pay the registration.
I just had to pay over $200 for a car that I didn't drive because I didn't Non-Op it. Pay the $10, you'll save much more! |

You have to file a non-operational permit, there is no amount of time it has to be non-operational before. You can still register it that way.
The fine goes up the longer you take to register it. A 73 VW won't be that much no matter what. |

There's a fine which increases with the amount of time it's unregistered. Get it registered ASAP. I think if it's only a month, you're still able to do that. As I recall, the fine is not huge. |

There are fines in every state when the registration expires...but only if you are driving it. As soon as you put it back on the road (if you do) go get ur registration. |
