are you from the us? here in europe we have much smaller cars, which are of course also much cheaper... i'm a student and can't afford something very expensive so i drive a mitsubishi colt. we pay taxes for cars according to their weight, which makes it very cheap, insurance is calculated including things like horsepower and stuff, so that makes it cheap as well... and it only takes 5.5 liters of unleaded fuel for 100 kilometers... oh and i think mitsubishi is great, my parents had one that is now 22 years old and it never broke or anything... oh, toyota aygo are very good as well... yaris too but i think aygo are cheaper... but they're quite new, so if you're looking for a used car it' might be hard to find one of these... |

Toyota is a good choice for someone with a low income. very low maintenance, good gas mileage, and very dependable! |

My husband has a 92 Jeep Cherokee with over 250,000 miles on it. It is the best car we have ever owned. I have been through 2 mini-vans in the time that he has had the Jeep. General maintenance is all we have had to do to it. (tires,battery,and an alternator.) You can't go wrong with a Jeep. |

new for low income?
i'd say #1 honda fit. it has much of the room of a small minivan, fuel economy and price of a subcompact. it's also safe and handles well.
some other cheap reliable cars that fall onto the top 10 cheapest new cars to own are
toyota yaris
hyundai accent
nissan versa 1.6L
kia rio
a little further down the list, and according to CR, the one with the fewest repair bills chevy cobalt 5 spd. |
