Well, in most (but not all.) states, prices do vary, so it makes a difference where you buy it from. However, if your quotes are all ONLINE quotes, none of them are any good anyway - they don't do mvr checks and the credit check, WHICH VERIFIES YOUR RATES, until you are about to purchase the policy.

there should NOT be that big of difference in quotes. make sure they are each quoting the EXACT same coverages. also, one may have run your mvr and clue reports and found something that raised your rates, while the other did not. ALWAYS ask them if they have. if they dont and you have something on your record, they will give you a lower quote, but once the policy goes to get issued they WILL run it and then your premium will come back higher anyway. As for the company itself. many people tend to go to "big name" companies like State Farm, Allstate, etc. this does NOT mean they are better, it only means they choose to spend their money advertising. Some of the best and most reputable companies are ones you have probably never heard of. Try calling a local independent agent. They write for a lot of companies and can find you the best rate with a good company. Make sure your company has an "A" rating and ask about how their customer service and claims handling is.

much depends on what you haven't seen. what the policy actually covers, how well the policies are paid out, how quickly they're paid out, what other things are happening to the company and financial markets, whether the company is charging excessively, Whether some companies classify you or your vehicle or your area as a bad risk etc etc. That's why you're encouraged to shop around, to try to find an affordable policy from an insurer who'll still be around and will payout promptly if you have trouble. It's not too different from Russian Roulette for even the best informed people.

Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of car/truck, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. Some companies run credit scores and MOST run a motor vehicle report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement.

The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent. Don't go across town, or to some other city - look for someone CLOSE. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems, and give you rate comparisons of several different companies.

I would check consumer reports or some other independent survey, for my personal opinion, I like a big name company that I know will fix my vehicle in the event of an accident, and has good customer service. I have Allstate and have had a hit run, a break in and a auto theft, and have been paid well and in a timely matter every time.
