Begginning drivers and insurance?

When a high school student gets a permit, do I have to call the insurance company and add them to the policy? I know it may increase the rate drastically, so what is best to do?

I can only speak for the company I work for, but....
We give a discount to new drivers for watching a short video, and signing on on a certificate. This discount is not available to them if they have HAD an accident or ticket before being "rated" on a vehicle. Different companies have these programs..Ours is a 20% discount, when you team this up with a Good student discount, (another 27%) it makes a huge difference on rate. Lets say you don't rate the new driver,,,the insurance company would more than likely pay the claim, but you could also risk being cancelled. Your driver may not be eligible for any extra discount, they would have gotten, and you would end up with a surcharge on your policy, which would end up costing more in the long run, than biting the bullet to begin with. |

I notified my insurance company when my son got his permit.
But the rate didn't skyrocket until he got his license then it doubled |

No. You use your parent's car insurance company, but you have to get your own registration plate that confirms the car is yours if you own one. |

check with agent to see if it is cheaper for them to be drivers or you may also ask if you can get separate policy for them and have them help with this |

Well first of all if the little hoodlum is a person of poor judgement like markski and cant drive responsibly the parent could end up on the hook financially for all damage and poop resulting from the little morons bad actions. Its the law to have proper insurance. Liability insurance covers the driver not the car. |

O-bey the Law, any one who drives your car , lives with you must be on your ins. policy. call the drivers license place & ask.. My grandson lives with us. had a 2-permit's for 2 years, we reported him to our ins. & as long as he make good grades & sent proff from school, our Ins. stayed the same..........,..... When he turned 18 in feb. he got his regular liceans, & registered his car in his name he'd bought ,that was in our name till then.,..................................... still lives in our house & He is still on our ins. & he has to pay 700.00 every 6 mo. he graduated this year & will be 17 next year & then it will go higher our ins. man said........he will half to get his own ins. = unless he is still in school.....(colledge) if so, then he can stay on our ins. longer....hope this helps. |

Not to worry, if your agent is on the ball he or she will remember you have one getting a permit, and will contact you. But yes, anyone in the household that has a permit to drive MUST be listed on the policy. If they don't call you, call them. Yes it will increase your premium, a lot. |

I don't think you will have to add them, but it may not be as expensive as you thinkj since a permit requires a licenced driver in the car anytime they drive |

you dont have to add them on, they will charge you an arm and a leg. the insurance company will only find out if your kid gets into an accident or gets a ticket then they will have a reason to check with the dmv, other than that save your money until they dont find out. my parents did that to me but i gotten into many accidents and even got my license suspended from the amount of tickets i had, and got kicked off the insurance my the insurance company, i had troubles finding a company that would accept me but i paid a lot for the first year now i have gotten a discount :) |
