Best value car/insurance for a new driver (teenager)?
|
Hey
Ive just started taking driving lessons (im 17), and am hopefuly gonna buy my first car soon. I'll probaly just get a second hand one from the paper, but, is there that much difference in the insurance cost with the different cars (like, if i buy a Vauxhall Cora will it be more expensive in insurance than if I get a Ford Focus etc etc).
Also, how much will I be looking to pay for for insuance? Im hoping its no higher than £500 a year, as I dont have a ton of money.
Thanks

I found this website very helpful. Obviously Class 1 is cheaper than class 20, however if it's a Ferrari or a Citroen C1 I think you'll struggle to get it under £800 p/a. Good luck anyway!

You could get a parent to be the main insured person on the car with you as a named driver - you won't be able to build up your no-claims doing this but it will be cheaper until you are older - then take out your own policy. Otherwise - If you are buying your own car (even a second hand one through a dealer or garage) - you may be able to take advantage of first year's insurance as part of a deal - this would be in your name - and is usually subsidised (I paid £450 6 years ago) and it was then cheaper getting my own policy the following year with a year's no-claims behind me. You would need to look into any restrictions regarding lower age limits on this kind of deal though. |

go fully comp that will bring the cost down
go to one of the comparison sites but also check with the brokers direct on thier own sites as confused.com and the likes can cost more than going direct |

Quinn Direct is very good for young drivers. Use a comparison site like http://www.confused.com http://www.gocomapre.com or http://www.comparethemarket.com
Make sure you get some quotes before you buy a car, you don't want to end up buying a car that you can't afford to insure.
When I was checking quotes for a friend (who is a young male driver living in London) last August I found that insuring a 52 reg Focus was cheaper than an older Fiesta. Generally I find older cars cost more than newer cars to insure. Another thing that I found interesting was that the cost of insurance was the same for 1.4 as 1.6
If you add your mum or dad as a named driver this will usually lower your premiums (of course they must have a driving licence). Or you could do what alto said. |

hate to break it to you, but no way in hell you're going to get insurance as cheap as £500 a year! I've been driving 6 and a half years (i'm nearly 25) and mine is just shy of £900 a year!
Like you've suggested, go for a second hand car (but not too old) in the small hatchback range. The smaller the engine, the lower your insurance band, meaning it'll be cheaper. Avoid cars with modifications (spoliers, fancy wheels, lowered suspension etc) as it may look pretty, but will push up the insurance. Insurance on small cars are much of a muchness. A 1.2 is the largest engine you should be looking at - anything above that will get seriously expensive!
Also it does pay to shop around. If your parents drive, or if you've got older siblings who drive, find out what offers are available for 'families' - ie there's often deals where if someone in your family is insured with one company, both you and they can get cheaper insurance if you also sign up. Although even if this is the case, sometimes you can still get cheaper insurance elsewhere.
I'm with elephant.co.uk - have been for about 3 years now (before I was 2nd named driver on my mum's car). as a young driver, they gave me a very good quote. Definitely worth checking them out. I think my brother's with Admiral and both my parents are with Direct Line.
If you can't afford your own car, plus it's insurance (and don't forget you'll also have to pay road tax, plus other things like MOT and servicing!), you might do better to be second named driver on one of your parents/siblings cars (assuming one of them drives) until you can afford your own. |

£500 is way too under estimated...my 1st time insurance was £1260. 00 and i was 23 yr old female driver.
the insurance will be cheaper for a less valued car eg. vauxhall corsa would be a lot cheaper to insure than a ford focus.
i would advise you for your 1st car buy an old run around and just insure it 3rd party fire and theft because it would be cheap to replace.
try picking out a car from www.autotrader.co.uk and then try and get an insurance quote from there. |

You must try www.confused.com you will then see the difficulty you face.
Many Company's won't insure anyone under 21/25 to them you are seen as an easy source of money. |
