Both me and my sister are new drivers. Would it be cheaper to get joint or separate car insurance policies?

A insurance policy is only for one named person - they can add additional drivers to allow for it to be effectively a joint use policy.

but its NOT a joint policy, if the additional driver after 5 years wants their own vehicle they are NOT entitled to any no claims bonus on many policies as they are not the main insured person.

Some insurance companies like direct line may offer named driver no-claims bonus but you need to go to a BROKER (as hip not on line) and ask about this as this is very important for you both.

That said it would be cheaper for the female the be the named insured with you as additional driver.

other than that its a great idea and a Way of sharing the car and insurance and its costs.

Very sensible idea to share the insurance costs, and yes, it would be cheaper to get insurance with both names on. In fact, you can't get 2 insurance policies for the same vehicle.
Adding your sister when she passes will be cheaper as the cost is proportional to how long the policy has left to run.

if and when your sister passes her driving test she will (as a female) be able to get cheaper insurance than you so from a sayings point of view in the short term anyway it would be cheaper for you to be a named driver on her insurance so maybe if your sister took lessons and passed her test before you bought your car then you could sort out your insurance

What J G (above guy) said. I just want to add that if you were to get 2 cars and live under the same roof, it would still be cheaper to get both people and both cars under one policy.

I don't know where you are from, but in NC it would be cheaper to add her to the policy from the beginning. cause you need insurance in NC in order to get you drivers license. if you took the policy our in your name only, then add her on later it will cost you more

Even as a learner driver females will generally get a cheaper price for insurance. You should jut phone around and ask them to try all scenarios for you. In your name with her as learner driver, in your name with her added, ask if anyone willing to do joint policy. Ithink Direct Line among others now allow named drivers to build up no claims discout.
