Bumping in to the back of another car & paying myself.?
|
My boyfriend bumped in to the back of another car last week, he thought it was nothing but got a call last night - the damage is gonna cost £477 to repair. My bf wants to pay for it himself because his excess is £500 anyway and his premiums will shoot up, so its the best way. However, the guy wont give him any more quotes because he wants it done at his local garage....
Does anyone know where he stands with this?
Thanks

tell him to bite the bullet and just pay, if anybody was stupid enough to run into the back of me i would be tempted to take them to the cleaners |

Go through the insurance or take the £477 hit. Up to the other guy where he gets his car fixed. |

Tell your boyfriend if the other driver does not get at least another quote (on paper) then he should let the other guy go through his insurance and claim off of bf's insurance company. It could be that the person does not want to go through insurance company because he is not insured anyway. In which case the repair bill goes away. There could also be a sting so that both the garage and the other driver gets some extra cash to divvy up. What you also have to weigh up is how old is his car, is it worth the £477 repair bill. If he does not want to go through the insurance ask yourself why? |

Paying the £477 is all very well, and may be worth it to save your No Claims Bonus. But be careful the other driver then doesnt try and pull the 'whiplash' claim, I see it happen all too often. Then you are out of pocket and your insurance would be involved anyway as injury claims can be a bit pricey!
With regards to more than one quote, your bf could ask for more than one - but whether the other driver will do it or not is another matter. Insurers will refuse to pay anything 'inflated' - so they have more chance of keeping the cost of the claim down. One bit of advice is your boyfriend re-paying his insurers the cost of the claim? One way to retain your No Claims, although an effect on the premiums is almost certain. |

if he doesnt go through the insurance co then he has to take the other guys demands, just the way it is. |

He has the right to have it fixed where ever he wants. The only way around it would be to have your insurance handle it, and they might bring it down slightly, but then they would know about it. |

I'd pay the £477 and let him get it done where he wants. If you want to avoid going through the insurance you don't really have a choice.
Going through your insurance would give you guarantees but I put money on them starting to claim for whiplash etc. |

If your boyfriend wants to pay for it himself and keep his insurance company out of it then it's up to him, but the other guy also has a right to make sure the repairs are done properly at a reputable garage. Personally, if anyone bumped into me and offered to pay rather than go through insurance, I'd accept it but tell them that the car is going to be repaired by a main dealer not a back street garage. If the car was repaired through an insurance company, it would be repaired at a reputable repair shop so the other driver is quite right to expect the same. Make sure your boyfriend sees a written quote for the work to be sure the other guy isn't ripping him off, if he won't provide quotes in writing I'd leave it to the insurance companies |

Bf should take advice from his insurance company. I think its only fair for the other driver to get more then one quote. |
