Buying a motorcycle without the V5/Logbook?

You apply to the DVLA for a new registration document in your name;

You'll need to pay Â£25, and the DVLA will check with the last registered keeper to make sure he knows his bike's being sold!

Until you gat a V5 in your name, you won't know if the title to the bike has been contested, or it's stolen or written off.

Run a data check before you buy it to be on the safe side.

The DVLA will charge you Â£25.

Whilst you should be careful buying vehicles without a logbook, most of the time it's okay and doesn't mean it's stolen. I have bought many bikes without logbooks and none of them were stolen. Even if there are loads of outstanding fines these will not come to you as you will only be liable for the bike from the date that it is registered in your name.

For peace of mind, you could always do an HPI check, it's only a fiver from the RAC http://www.rac.co.uk/web/vehiclechecks/status_checks/ (some companies may do it slightly cheaper but they won't always provide you with as much info).

Don't buy it! Are there a load of fines ready to come to the new owner? What did he get up to on that bike? The V5 is proof that HE owned it... The DVLA advises you not to buy without a V5 present. A different matter if it is a spares car you are stripping for parts for your own use, but a bike you intend to ride on the road? Get one with no questions pending, or ask him to buy a V5 in his name, and then buy it from him.

DO NOT BUY THIS MOTORCYCLE. Ask the seller to apply for a logbook and see what his reaction is. Why hasn't he got the logbook. It will cost you Â£25.00 for a v5 and if the bike is stolen or dodgy then you will loose everything. You can ask the police to check if the bike has been reported as stolen or write to the DVLA. It will cost you either Â£2.50 or Â£3.50 for what they call a fee paying enquiry and ask them about the bike, telling them that you wish to buy, no logbook and you are not sure of the vehicles history.
If the vehicle is legit and everything is ok then you can apply on a v62 from your DVLA local office and give them Â£25.00. They will then send the v5 out to you. PLEASE BEWARE OF FRAUDSTERS, I hope this helps
