Buying a used car.... questions re plates?

Ok so I bought a used car from a friend. I have insurance but can't transfer the plates to my name yet cuz I have $250 in old somethings on my license. So I was wondering what sort of trouble will I get into when a) the sticker expires at the end of the month and b) the ownership not being in the same name as the insurance. It'll take me a few weeks to put all that money together. Thanks!!!

When the sticker expires, you won't be able to renew it until the fine($250) is paid. Ownership and insurance must match. In case of accident, the insurance may or may not cover you b/c the car is yours(no plate yet). Driving a car without proper documents could cost you a lot of headaches, time, and money if you get pulled over by a cop or involve in an accident. Just borrow money from friend(s) or family to pay off the fine on your licence so that you can transfer the pate to your name. Don't wait or it may be too late. You save yourself a lot of troubles this way. |

I don't know about ontario but in MD the insurance has to match the owner. You cannot insure a car you don't own. As for the tags..the police will probably take them. I'm assuming you don't have a valid license if you have fines on it so you will probably go to jail as well. |
