So, I want to get my license before I leave for college next year, but I don't want to take a driver's ed class. I'd rather wait until I'm 18, but the thing is I won't be 18 until Nov. 2009 (which by then I'd already be in college). So, my question is do I still have to take the class if I'm already 17 and a half? Can I just study on my own and then take the written test? Also, what do I do after I get my permit?

At 17 1/2 you can get your permit without needing to take any type of driver's training. But you will not be able to get your license until you are 18.

Once you get your permit, you will need a licensed driver 25 or older to ride with you EVERY time that you are driving. Getting caught by the police driving unsupervised with just a permit can cost you your permit & any chance of getting your license until up to age 21.

As soon as you turn 18, you can call DMV (or go online) & schedule your skills test to get your unrestricted license.
