Can I be reimbursed auto insurance for the days my car was undrivable due to accident caused by someone else?

So there was a car accident and it was determined to be the other person's fault. My car was a mess (I wish they just totaled the thing) and is still in the shop, it's been 2.5 weeks.

They're saying they can't reimburse the auto insurance because if something happened to the car during this time it's covered. But is that a bluff (I know they try to get out of stuff). if something happened to my car at a repair shop, and it's only there because of the accident that was determined to be the other party's fault, if something happened to my car, isn't the other insurance company liable? It never would've been there if it weren't for the accident. And if so, who do I go to? It obviously wasn't the guy I just talked to.

I don't think this is unreasonable. It's not like I'm asking for the auto loan daily rate. Obviously I would still have to pay for that since it's toward ownership of the car. But the insurance makes sense to me - no?

No, you have to continue to pay insurance on it, especially if you have a rental car and your insurance is covering you on the rental car. What the other insurance company DOES have to do however, is pay you a daily rate for "loss of use" which factors in all the things that go into paying for your car (other than gas). However, most insurance companies (or maybe the law varies by state) have a stipulation that if they pay for your rental car during the time your car is in the shop, then you are not entitled to a loss of use payment. Again, I have no idea if this varies by state or not.

ETA: They did pay me for the entire time my car was in the shop, waiting on parts and everything, from the day of the accident when it was towed in, until the day I got my car back (3 weeks total).

You still have to pay weather you have use of the vehicle or not. You can cancel the policy when the repairs are done, but it will only cause you more headachs when you try to get new insurance. Good news is, you probably have rental reimbusment, so that way you should be able to get your $$ back if you rented a car while yours is being fixed.

The other company that was at fault owes you for a rental while it is in the shop for repairs. If you are asking that they pay for insurance for the rental car, then no, they do not owe. Since if anything happens to the rental, YOUR insurance would cover, since this would be considered a substitute vehicle. But say you took out insurance for collision and comprehensive since you do not have on your own policy, since your policy would only pay for liability, then it is yours to pay, not the other insurance company. Anything that happens to the rental, has no bearing on this accident, only the damages to your own auto that was in the accident.

Your gas, loan, insurance etc has no bearing on this accident. If not for the accident, you would still be paying as usual. They only owe to repair your car and pay for a rental car till your car is returned to you period.

If something happens in the shop to your own auto, then the shop would be held liable.

The other insurance company usually pays for a bottom of the barrel rental car, $25 a day, while your car is in the shop. You're only entitled to a rental for REPAIR time, not for "the shop is busy and can't get around to working on your car" or "the part will take five weeks to come in" time.

If something happens to your car at the shop (like it's stolen, or the shop burns with your car in the bay), the SHOP is liable for it, not the insurance of the guy who hits you.

They are not trying to scam you. It's still your car and you are still responsible for it no matter where it is or why it's there.
